  1. So its not actually official, as it is still being finalised, and what they promise and what you get could be totally different things.

And what on earth is The Cruising Association? That just sounds wrong.

    1. “Founded in 1908, the Cruising Association represents the interests of cruising sailors and motor-boaters worldwide and provides up-to-date cruising information. Our base, next to London’s Limehouse Marina, has a fine library with excellent cruise planning facilities. We have active sections around the UK, also in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, Biscay, the Inland Waterways of Europe and a Blue Water section. ”

I’m glad to see they will salvage Pride House after all. That cancellation on top of the cancellations of World Pride events was making London LGBTs look quarrelsome and amateurish.

Seriously though, London LGBTs need to face the fact that it takes money and volunteers to run events. They need to be ready to pay up and volunteer.

Because Boris is not Ken and Ken Livingston was always a passionate supporter of Pride (both from the standpoint of Diversity/Equality visibility and also the well-understood role that Pride events play in bringing enormous amounts of money INTO London)

People should read Peter Tatchell’s excellent commentary in Pink News on the issues surrounding the World Pride fiasco for further info.

Another right-on Leftie praising Ken and Pete to the skies without any justification.

London needs to spend it’s money on important issues, not throw it at a bunch of semi-naked fairies blowing whistles just to give the impression they are doing something. If they really wanted to help, how about a donation to London Friend or the Albert Kennedy Trust, where it might actually do some good?

    @F Young
I don’t think that the cancellations should be seen only in terms of reflection on London LGBT’s events abilities – the blame for the World Pride fiasco should be squarely and firmly placed equally at the door of Westminster Council, The Greater London Authority, Mayor Boris Johnson, The MET, The Coalition Government, David Cameron AND the Pride Committee.

It was a shambles from beginning to end but ultimately the responsibility for ensuring that the event took place properly rests with Boris Johnson as London Mayor and David Cameron as Prime Minister. This wasnt just an ordinary Pride – it was WORLD PRIDE – some 3 weeks before the UK launches the Olympics.

The shoddy nature of the planning reflects very badly indeed on the UK and London’s ability to organise an event on this scale (especially coming so soon before London is calling people from all over the World to attend the Olympics here.)

That Westminster Council, The GLA, The MET AND Mayor Boris Johnson were all involved in taking decisions which forced the Pride Committee to abandon long agreed plans is simply not on.

Boris Johnson’s supporters were spinning furiously on Twitter on Saturday, desperately trying to waylay criticism of his own role in the fiasco.

I had one ‘Tory Supporter’ who harangued me repeatedly for daring to suggest Boris’s role in the shambles. I later discovered she was approaching several others who had done the same down the #WorldPride hashtag timeline.

She denied having any ‘role’ other than as a supporter of Boris – although I deeply suspect this may not have been true.

Why no Olympic branding in this event? Let’s see some endorsement for this from the authorities. Though, the way the Olympic committee has trampled over expression, I do not really care for this event at all. In fact after reading Nick Cohen’s excellent Spectator article today, I am inclined to say: To hell with the 2012 Games.

Don’t get too excited! I cannot believe that the existing premises licence for the bar and restaurant at CA House would support an event of this nature and, according to the minutes of the local licensing authority, there has been no variation of the licence or agreement to a temporary events notice.

Moreover the basin is already the home of the water taxi service serving the Olympic site. When the British Waterways board applied for a licence to supplement their operations, there was such strong local opposition that the operators were forced to agree that they would stop serving at 10.00 pm.

Perhaps the Cruising Association (loving the innuendo) ought to stick to what it’s good at. Which is what exactly?

    Post a reply →
    1. They are extremely good at supporting the sailing community.

Their licence states that there are no restrictions on the hours on which these premises are open to the public according to the publically available document on the Tower Hamlets Licensing web access.

Delighted to see LBTH finally got round to publishing its licensing register online. Not before time!

Sales of alcohol at CA House are permitted between 11 am and 11 pm but it’s not so much the trading hours that concern me as much as the operating schedule, which sets out how the operators intend to meet the licensing objectives including the prevention of crime and disorder, prevention of public nuisance and the maintenance of public safety. Bearing in mind they were originally planning to host Pride House on Clapham Common, they are going to find that there’s very little space in Northey Street by comparison.

I’d love to see this work and be really popular but I can see some obstacles in the way.

        Post a reply →
        1. I don’t think from the comments I have read from organisers that they underestimate the obstacles.

They have not got the firm timeline of events, but I hope it goes ahead and succeeds.
