Well done, Budapest. You could probably teach us a thing or two given the homophobic climate in Hungary.

I wouldn’t say that the event passed off without an incident. Yes, everyone was safe, but there were sooo many policemen around, cordons etc. Would anyone ever see anything like that in London?

No need to know Hungarian to understand what’s going on here:

  5. Fantastic news, great to hear the police was on the right side in this instance – and I hope it’ll be a shining example to neighbouring countries (particularly those to the east and south).

Budapest Pride has been marred by violence in past years so it is nice to hear that there has been no trouble this year. I believe that the constitutional ban on gay marriage which was introduced at the beginning of this year could have increased sympathy for the Hungarian gay community. In a way I have no doubt that our Clause 28 spurred the gay rights movement on in this country. The introduction of a discriminatory law usually has the opposite effect to what it hopes to achieve. As I said at the beginning of this year we should not write Hungary off just yet. Unlike Dubai, Budapest is a city I look forward to visiting again.
