A New York court has dismissed an evangelical group’s challenge to the city’s marriage equality laws.

New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms claimed the state Senate acted illegally when it voted to approve a gay marriage bill last year.

The group said the Senate violated the state’s Open Meetings Laws by illegally prevented opposing senators from speaking and not sending the bill to the appropriate committees.

However, the Appellate Division of state Supreme Court in Rochester ruled against the group on Friday and said New York governor Andrew Cuomo and other supporters did not violate any laws.

Rev Jason J. McGuire, the leader of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and a plaintiff in the case, said he was “disappointed” and that the group was considering whether to appeal the decision.

New York legalised marriage for gay couples in July last year. Since then, more then 3,000 gay couples have tied the knot.
