Facebook has updated the icons used to signify key events on the profile timelines of users to include gay couples’ weddings.

Previously, the marriages of gay couples were marked by a straight bride and groom.

Since last year, the social network has allowed couples to register as being in civil unions and domestic partnerships depending on their country.

Facebook was the first social network to receive a GLAAD media award following the move, which GLAAD said sent a “clear message in support of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe”.

As part of its work towards preventing anti-LGBT bullying, it created the Network of Support with GLAAD and other LGBT organisations in 2010, focusing on online bullying.
