It’s hardly a positive stance considering that Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt is reported as saying that marriage equality is “not necessary”, and that civil partnerships “give same-sex couples all the benefits conferred by marriage”.
He’s well and truly wrong on both counts !
I suppose that having “no desire to be a member of any organisation that equates homosexuality to bestiality” might just be slightly positive, but if so it just underlines what a low reputation they are starting from.
Lets hope so. It’s about time Unionist Politicians caught up with the rest of the world. There is no place in Politics for religion. We in Northern Oreland have learned this the hard way.
@Stu….
…….Given that incest is common amongst heterosexuals and within straight families in particular, it would seem from their constant referencing of the subject, that it is straights who want legalised incest, also given that there are rarely gay siblings the chances of a call from gay people for the legalising of incest is highly unlikely, so this entire argument is redundant for us. In other words a desire rather than a red herring in their case.
Why doesn’t someone ask these morons if they’d partake of a CP if it were available to them since they consider them on a par with marriage? I think we know what their response would be and the lamest excuses given as to why they wouldn’t.
All this “extraordinary meeting” will do is reaffirm that the UUP is well and truly stuck in the stone age and will be as judgmental and bigoted as it has always been.
If Mike Nesbit was really any different from the backwoods men that inhabit the UUP he would have joined the Alliance Party or even started his own middle of the road party. I can’t see that he will have any luck in changing this bunch of dinosaurs……
What a nasty creep. I sent him an email protesting his hateful comments, and he replied calling me a “faceless twit” with “no balls”. (Funny how homophobes are always referencing male genitalia…)

WOW
They need to expel Maginnis too and ideally be more proactively supportive of LGBT rights
However, I am shocked by this positive stance by the UUP

Gerry
Its not a great stance
Its better than I expect of the UUP though
Perhaps they are turning the corner?
Steve,

It would be an improvement on the DUP’s stance:

Possibly.
But also a red herring in the case of equal marriage!
I hope, Mr. Liam Fox now is more confident in his sexuality. Thank you, North Ireland.
The UUP, while not as disgustingly bigoted as the DUP is really quite conservative and homophobic.
Maginnis will not be expelled from his party and the UUP will not officially endorse marriage equality.
Unionism is another word for homophobic conservatism – at least insofar as Northern Irish politics is concerned.
