  1. WTF? Mugabe is an evil dictator, what kind of lobotomised idiot could possibly think this is a good idea?

    1. DJ Sheepiesheep 30 May 2012, 10:08pm

What. Have I understood this correctly. Mugabe is now running a travel agency? Sandals here we come!

  2. Another Hannah 30 May 2012, 2:13pm

Oh dear. This organisation is going to need serious attention now by the more civilised and less voodoo countries. This is as seriously backward as witchcraft.

  3. As rational decisions go, this makes as much sense as posthumously awarding Hitler the Nobel Peace Prize.

    1. Carry on Cardinal ! 30 May 2012, 2:59pm

Wait till you see who the next Pope is!

      1. Talking of popes, Pius XII was declared venerable in 2009 meaning he is being investigated as a possible saint. He stood by and let Hitler do what he liked and was in a way quite evil and yet is now being posthumously blessed so if the church had their way I wouldn’t be surprised if Hitler was made a saint

  4. WTF??

  5. This simply isn’t true. The guardian originatef this story, and within half an hour the un issued a statement refuting it.

    1. Certainly there’s nothing about it on the BBC website.

  6. Guys guys guys calm down.

Clearly the people at the UN are clever cookies. Clearly the plan is to boost tourism for other countries. What better way to do that than by having this muppet as the leader of tourism for Zimbabwe?

I mean it’s not like they would be as stupid as to appoint such a despicable man to a position of actual importance or prestige would they? Would they……. :\

  7. This would be called a joke, it it wasn’t so tragic. What were they thinking of.

  8. Mervyn the Robot 30 May 2012, 2:57pm

A relative of mine was murdered driving through Zimbabwe. I would not recommend it to tourists, straight or gay.

  9. This is surely a wind-up?

  10. Keith Farrell 30 May 2012, 3:01pm

I hope this is a joke, if not then that UN is in bad trouble, they must really be desperate using this prick to do the work

  11. Is this a joke? Seriously?

  12. David Boothroyd 30 May 2012, 3:12pm

This story is really much less than meets the eye. The UNWTO has asked all the worlds’ heads of state to promote tourism; if they say yes they will, they get given a lovely ceremony. Much as everyone outside ZANU-PF (and plenty within it) detest it, Mugabe is still head of state and the UNWTO can’t gainsay that.

  13. Gay Kernow 30 May 2012, 3:14pm

Well my my I do belive I just saw a white rabbit wearing a tail coat and gloves with a big pocket watch run past sayng ” i’m late, I’m late “

  14. I’m sorry. Who puts up an article about a news story no less than a day after it has been proven to be fabricated? Even compared to the Graun’s economy with the truth at times, this is really poor.

  15. Garry Cassell 30 May 2012, 3:25pm

Looks like more good work from the UN to appoint that F*********As**** to such an appointment…wonder why the world is losing faith in the United Nations…

  16. HaHa, Looks like the UN has a sense of irony anyway.

  17. Miguel Sanchez 30 May 2012, 3:30pm

I think it’s time to boycott those countries.

  18. NutjobsareeverywheretheUNtoo 30 May 2012, 4:01pm

Failed state failed by him. how much robbed Zimbabweans money has he paid for this post and who too? Time the citizens woke up to him

  19. theGentleWarrior 30 May 2012, 4:35pm

Robert Mugabe is the #1 reason to not go visit Zimbabwe weather your gay/straight /man/woman black/white … human.

And a Robert Mugabe recommendation to go see another country would at the very least give me pause to to visit said country.

    As for the UN, well
“Do you kids want to be like the real U.N., or do you just want to squabble and waste time?” – Principal Skinner, 1998

  20. PAUL MARSHALL 30 May 2012, 4:36pm

THE MAN’S A LUNATIC AND I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE SOMEONE HASN’T DONE THE WORLD A FAVOUR AND TAKEN HIM OUT,,,,OH BUT WHATS THE POINT THERE’S NO WORTH IN HIS COUNTRY, JUST PEOPLE STARVING AND LIVING IN FEAR FROM DAY TO DAY, UN WAKE UP,,OH AND BY THE WAY THIS APPLIES TO THE MONSTER IN CHARGE OF SYRIA,,AS THE SAYING GOES, THE WHOLE WORLD’S GONE MAD ;-(

  21. I would have assumed Zimbabwe’s tourism industry was based on Aid Workers going in and out of the country to help the impoverished population that are the result of his incompetent hateful regime’s economic destruction.

  22. The World Does Not Take Homophobia Seriously! We are throw away humans! This will lead to extermination!

  23. Staircase2 30 May 2012, 5:02pm

    …apparently not…

  24. john sharp 30 May 2012, 5:08pm

mugabe deserves one title taht of murderer to his own people. he is APARTEID in reverse . i will never visit his homophobic country so much for good abode

  25. Hey, it’s not April 1st! What gives? How on earth does that work?

  26. A serious misallocation of UN trust. They should have pressured Mugabe more to reform his policies in Zimbabwe and allow same-sex relationships.
But I’m guessing most individuals on this site agree with me already.

  27. Hmmm,
I just checked it is not April 1st

  28. Putting him in charge of UN tourism reminds me of the Catholic Church putting pedophile priest in charge of the young children.

This is proof the UN is anti-homosexual and they are making a statement and that statement is they are crazy.

  29. James Else 30 May 2012, 5:59pm

notwithstanding the malicious action and murderous activities of the Big Chief of Zimbabwe, the following needs to be understood.

THere are sanctions against specific individuals and not the entire nation.

It is most definitely NOT safe for tourists to visit Zimbabwe.

There is very limited cellphone coverage

There are possibly 4 x certified air-traffic controllers for the entire country

THe utter poverty of the nation is overwhelming and is a travesty considering the massive personal wealth of Mugabe estimated to be in excess of US$ 1 billion.

    Kleptocracy

Think about WHAT YOU ARE COLLUDING with when you go to Zimbabwe for a holiday.

  30. Following this the UN recommended Gary Glitter as Head of Child Services and Nick Leeson Head of Banking Services…. What the hell is the UN thinking??

  31. chris lowercase 30 May 2012, 7:54pm

pink news getting slightly carried away there. no wonder we cant shrug that gossiping queens stereotype.

though if this was to be a remotely accurate report of events, it would be on spitting image.

  32. Jock S. Trap 30 May 2012, 8:05pm

I know we’ve had extra Bank Holidays the last two years but no-one mentioned we’d have a few extra April Fools Day’s too.

    Totally ridiculous… totally shameful.

How can the UN promote equality, trying to improve how others are treated in countries that fail human rights Then use one of it’s worst dictators in the world in a position like this?

    Doesn’t add up…. Shameful!

  33. How typical. Somebody prints something and everyone believes it with out question.
If you actually check the UNWTO information. You will find out that actually “UNWTO and WTTC will present an Open Letter to Heads of State and Government worldwide, highlighting the importance of Travel and Tourism.” (Quote off the official website)
Mugabe has NOT been named as a leader for tourism. This is just an misleading headline.
And before anyone says anything, this does not mean I like Mugabe!!! We all know what a horrible intolerant dictator he is, end of.

  34. again…whaaat? isn’t this dude like evil or something… at least that’s what i heard. lol

    how was HE chosen? HOW!!?

  35. Another example of how double standard UN can be when it comes to supporting righteous causes. For years, citizens of Palestine have been assaulted by Israel and UN is still pretty ignorant about it. Shouldn’t be suprised when UN needs major funding from USA and Israel is a close ally of USA. Going against Israel would be equivalent of opposing USA. The recent UN human rights summit to recognize GLBT rights globally at Geneva still leave much to be desired. Gays were murdered in Iran & Iran, and where the hell is UN? As a gay man and citizen of the world, I’m insulted by UN which appointed this man to lead when his credibility is highly questionable.

    1. the UN is not one organization but an umbrella. like congress, you have barney franks and kucinichs and you have ron pauls and bachmanns. it’s not “The UN” but some people in one organization connected to the UN.

  36. I think I may need to make an appointment for an eye test! Did I REALLY read that the UN’s World Tourism Organisation has made this excuse for a human being a ‘leader for tourism’ this murderer, this man who bullies and beats people into voting for him, who the words ‘human rights’ don’t appear in his vocabulary, not forgetting his views on homosexuality?!

Please tell me I am completely wrong in what I was reading!

What IDIOT decided that this was a good idea!!! I bet bloody Mugabe is laughing his damned socks off at this!

    1. Get to your opticians then. He hasn’t been made an ambassador of anything. At all. He, together with a whole host of other world leaders, has been sent a letter from the UNWTO about world tourism. Thats it. Thats all. Move along. Nothing to see.

  37. sick sicker sickest. next he’ll be named husband of the year, presidential satorial prize, the official UN ambassador for public speaking, dean of post colonialism ex terrorists dictatorial heads of state, one party rule friendship committee chairperson, … he’s so misunderstood, and we should try to help him feel more wanted. dead or alive.

  38. This must be a joke. And it is not even April Fool’s day.

What is wrong with the UN.

  39. Mugabe is an idiot! The UN must be really stupid and out of touch

  40. the man should have been executed years ago not given this position this will kill tourism not promote it

  41. One of the world’s biggest homophobes and most evil dictator being recgnized by the UN? What next, Hitler given the Nobel Peace prize?

  42. You couldn’t have made this up could you? Even if writing a fantasy nightmare scenario or alleged hilarious comedy script you could not even go there. But these dogs look after their own. I’m speechless. Dumfounded.

  43. It is a sad indictment of the UN today :(
