I watched Ukraine thuggery on Panorama this week, on an exposé of fascism, racism and violence at soccer matches. Their authorities are not bothered about such things, let alone violence against or the rights of sexual minorities.
That country should not even be on the waiting list to join the EU, they are so far away from civilisation as we know it.

I watched the programme and was left wondering why the dangers to LGBT people were not mentioned. Not the first time the BBC have considered homophobia as being of lesser or no importance.

The Ukraine is a country of two halves. While the mainly Catholic western half of the country wants closer ties with the west, the other, Eastern Orthodox east wants closer links with Russia, a fact that almost split the country apart a few years ago. Disregarding the Pope, Catholic populations in general are less homophobic than Eastern Orthodox populations and that is where the problem lies. Sadly these countries will bring in any type of anti-gay legislation short of recriminalising homosexuality. We can be grateful that we only had Clause 28 to contend with, some countries want to lock people up just for saying the ‘H’ word. The Council of Europe must act against such laws.

Can we also reconsider the EU membership of Italy. It allows an absolute monarchy with no human rights to function as an independent state with no accountability right in the middle of Rome. This is relatively new. Even newer, recently this state said it would not abide by Italian laws. Now it has a man under detention in the Vatileaks scandal, which is taking Italy by storm.

This “Oh Me Too” stance that Ukraine is taking more than anything else says that it still thinks of itself as a province of the new imperial Russia and not an independent state. One would think that after the centuries of oppression Ukraine has suffered at the hands of the Russians, it would distance itself from everything Russian, but, instead they follow Russia’s lead like slavish sheep.
