  2. Egypt and Jamaica?? Do these guys know what these places will be like for a high-profile gay couple??
Naive and insular at best, I suspect.

    Post a reply →
      1. Why?

Because they want to repeat holidays they have enjoyed without any problem?

Does a single gay couple not going to a country such as Egypt or Jamaica on holiday really makes such a dent in the tourist economy that those involved in LGBT oppression will sit up and take notice?

Surely a better approach is engaging with international LGBT agencies and seeking to encourage LGBT ground roots in these countries?

There is no single approach or answer to the complex problems of homophobia in other countries – staying away can be as harming to the LGBT nationals as it is beneficial.

        Re wider Africa:
“Despite discriminatory laws many gays and lesbians still travel to Africa and have a great time. Laws commonly do not reflect the attitudes of local people. If you are afraid of being discriminated against then just be discreet or travel to South Africa. Another safe way to travel is with a group/tour that offers gay-friendly African vacations.”

I don’t think the issue was protest so much as their safety, being high profile.
I certainly wouldn’t go to either country, especially if I had just become famous for being gay.

I very much doubt this lucky couple win will make world headlines for them to be suddenly internationally famous.

  5. Why Jamaica and Egypt? These are some of the most viciously homophobic places in the world. Why spend their money there?

I really don’t get people sometimes. Why not Europe? Why not Japan or China? Australia? The Americas?

There are loads of countries in the world where homosexuality isn’t illegal. Why can’t they pick one of those places?

    1. Maybe they want to see the Pyramids etc

As for Jamaica – I must admit that one I can not find a reasonable explanation for.

We’ve been to Egypt twice and donate to a local orphange in Luxor, we’ve also been to Jamaica before, we’ve also been to China & walked the Great Wall, walked Sydney Harbour bridge, swam in the Great Barrier Reef to name but a few things, appreciate the comments, but we’ve never had any issues in all of our travels to over 30 countries,

      1. Good luck guys. Warm congratulations.

Somewhere I recommend (that is also very gay friendly) is New Zealand, its worth hiring a car/motorhome and seeing both islands

I’ve loved hiking in the Jamaican interior and boating along its coast. It’s true that that society has a lot of improvements to make, but then again, so does mine. Bon voyage, Ian and Lyn!

Australia is homophobic by the standard of the west, since both political parties are homophobic and do not support equal marriage. All federal recognition of same sex relationships is constitutionally banned. As an Aussie, I would ask gay people to stay away from Australia until we get our act together on LGBT equality.

  8. Congratulations to this lovely couple. But with that huge chunk of money, they could go elsewhere where the environment is more gay-friendly. Meanwhile I’ll continue to dream about winning a jackpot.

Lyn and Ian are probably the luckiest couple in Wales at the moment. Not only do they have each other they have overcome the odds to win Euromillions.
The chances of winning the Euromillions jackpot are about the same as Elvis Presley coming back to Earth in a flying saucer, landing on the Loch Ness Monster then riding off on Shergar! Therefore I prefer to play Thunderball myself.
As for Jamaica and Egypt I wouldn’t recommend holidaying there. Jamaica as not the pl;ace to be for an out-gay couple and with the Muslim Brotherhood doing well in early results in the Egyptian election I cannot see that country being a gay destination for the forseeable future.

I lived in Porthcawl Wales forty years ago and didn’t know this couple! I thought all us gays were supposed to know each other?? (maybe they were pre-natal)? Meanwhile, congratulations to them! Please visit USA instead where our President Obama affirms marriage equality! Don’t visit those hateful nations like Egypt and Jamaica where they jail and murder us simply for being born perfectly non-heterosexual! The pyramids can be visited on GoogleEarth.

“I lived in Porthcawl Wales forty years ago and didn’t know this couple! I thought all us gays were supposed to know each other?? (maybe they were pre-natal)?”

Considering Ian Pearce (45) and Lyn Sexton (41) would have been 5 and 1 respectively, it’s understandable why you wouldn’t know them!

Not to be a pedant, but “prenatal” usually refers to women and pregnancy, as in “Prenatal care can help keep you and your baby healthy”. (Unless their lottery win has pioneered a new science!)

You know we are nearly equal as gay men and lesbians, when even a gay couple can win the lottery!

Please be very careful in Jamaica Lyn and Ian, it is a terrible country for gay men. Lesbianism is fine in Jamaica remember under their own criminal code!

Jamaica is probably the most homophobic country in the Caribbean. The homophobes there regularly beat up gays, Avoid Jamaica!!!!!!!!!! Except for Puerto Rico, most of the Caribbean countries do NOT like gays, so do not go there and support the homophobes.
