  1. To coin a phrase “from the mouths of babes” good on him and his mother for making a small but significant stand against the bullies of the Westbro Baptists.

  2. They’ll think he’s been brainwashed…

    1. Brainwashing might be something they know about lol

      1. Jock S. Trap 20 May 2012, 5:02pm

Indeed… only from the brainwashed inflicting their own brand on others… esp free thinkers!

      2. That There Other David 20 May 2012, 6:13pm

Sadly brainwashing isn’t all. If you read the stories from the Phelps members that have fled the compound the level of child abuse inflicted by Fred on his family is truly shocking. He’s a monster. Put it this way, if there is a Hell he’s heading for it.

        1. The question must be …”What makes Fred Phelps like this?”. Psychologists would say it’s probably because he’s struggled with his own homosexuality and has turned self-loathing, outwards. This is the driving force behind most homophobia.

    2. Irony has never tasted so delicious

  3. Well done young man, and thank you to his mother for the great job she’s done in rasing a remarkable kid.

  4. I’m so glad to see this. There is hope for humanity after all.

  5. I admire the sentiment, but still maintain if you want to see the back of Westboro the best method is to blank them totally and starve them of publicity.
They thrive on publicity and conflict and if they genuinely cared that people didn’t think they were very nice they would’ve packed it in years ago.
Without their litigious public trolling they’d be forced to get real jobs.
As with all trolls, you feed them at your own risk.

    1. I think just the opposite. The more publicity these morons receive, the more revulsion ordinary, bible-belt Americans will feel. This can ONLY result in main-stream, organised religion, being regarded as the preserve of nut-jobs. Can’t come soon enough for me. Roll on a religion-free world. I think life in general is vastly improved with the demise of church membership and its dominance of public life.

  6. Shake Spear 18 May 2012, 3:53pm

One day, someone is going to pull a gun on the Westboros while they are ruining yet another funeral. And I shan’t mourn the loss of any of them.

    1. I hope no one harms theses loons. They would revel in the publicity and martyrdom, with hate groups in every country jumping on the band wagon.

  7. Alex Airey 18 May 2012, 3:55pm

Good on him, it just enrages me when i see articles about these people who picket yet makes me happy to see a young boy like this standing up to them!

    Good Job!

  8. God Bless the children for they shall inherit the earth.

  9. OH! so that’s what it was that sign. I thought it was ‘God Hate Fangs’ from True Blood. Aren’t they strange these” off the peg, out of a catalogue” preachers?

  10. Well done Josef!!!!

  11. It is so grossly irresponsible for Pink News to STILL be promoting the Westboro Baptist Cult in this disgraceful manner.

The Westboro cult is 1 family; it has about 80 members and is overseen by an abusive tyrant.

It is an entirely irrelevant cult whose only means of influence is the publicity offered to it.

Why is Pink News continuing to offer this nothing cult the oxygen of publicity it so desperately craves.

I guess Pink News doesn’t care that it’s been taken for a fool by this group of lunatics.

    1. “promoting”? hardly.

    2. My understanding of the definition of “promoting” must be somewhat different to your dAVID.

    3. Spanner1960 18 May 2012, 10:21pm

If this stuff was in mainstream news I might agree, but any LGBT person coming on here understand precisely what the WBC are about, so its not promotion, simply an update.

    4. Jock S. Trap 20 May 2012, 5:03pm

News is always worth reporting esp as main stream news doesn’t cover this acts.

In any case are you another who just want’s negative reporting…. nothing good eh?

I guess it’s people like you that turn those supportive people away from us.

  12. There’s something unsettling to me about the use of children in political and theological propaganda. Just because the Westboro lot are doing it doesn’t mean it is right to counter them using children.

    1. Its possible he chose to do it himself.

Some 9 year olds are capable of making decisions like that.

      1. Possible, although I doubt at 9 he is old enough to make a definitive decision about the existence of an omnipotent super being in the sky. I doubt he also dressed himself in an Arab American Institute t shirt.

        1. The parents do that.

        2. Jock S. Trap 19 May 2012, 1:03pm

I know i was Gay and was attracted to the same sex at that age… and I came from a strict Christian family so no influences… so why can’t children make up their Own minds on other matters?

    2. Spanner1960 19 May 2012, 9:03am

Children are people as well. They are also part of society and should have as much say as anybody else.

    3. Jock S. Trap 19 May 2012, 12:59pm

Yeah damn those other children who can speak and think for themselves….?

      Are you serious?

Shouldn’t we be proud of the fact that many young people will and are able to stand up to homophobia without the need to be told to do so?

    4. looks like we have to go to the innocence of a child to see the true message of Christianity.

  13. This brave young man is the future. Like Obama’s girls, LGBT equality issues are a no-brainer.

  14. Christopher 18 May 2012, 6:37pm

And a child shall lead them…

  15. GingerlyColors 18 May 2012, 6:45pm

It takes a nine year old boy to stand up to those idiots. For far too long the Westboro Baptist Church have made a mockery of their First Amendment Rights to free speech (which seems to allow hate speech as well). When Louis Theroux visited the WBC during the making of one of his documentaries he accompanied WBC members on a roadside protest during which an object was thrown from a passing car, hitting one of their children in the face. By trying to brainwash their children the WBC are putting them in the line of fire.

  16. Did they kill him ? I wouldn’t be surprised if Westboro Baptist Church started killing people, they are nothing more than thugs.

    1. They might want to.

  17. That lad by standing up to the homophobic Westboro Baptist Church is very brave. He is right God and his Son Jesus do not do hate.
I see no Christianity of the people at the Westboro Baptist Church

    1. Westboro Baptist Church is the Dostoyevsky’s Grand Inquisitor of our modern times. If Jesus returned to Earth today in United States and started preaching about love and tolerance WBC would probably protest against Jesus with signs reading “God hates Jesus”.

      1. they would probably crucify him again

  18. Seeing that picture just shows me how much grace there really is in the world.

  19. Well done for that little boy. Great!! And be aware the freaks are on the street again. Who let the dogs out, who, who. (Apologies to the dogs, the freaks are more like lice, fleas or bubonic rats)

    1. Huummmm, more like ticks. The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder called them “the foulest and nastiest creatures that be”.

      1. The parasite analogies are pretty apt, as a reporter on the ground demonstrates the Phelps’s business model isn’t so much “Hating Fags” specifically as trolling for emotive reactions off everybody then suing local authorities who don’t do enough to protect them or the individuals who cross the line when they lash out in retaliation.
        http://kanewj.com/wbc/
Remember 13 members of the Phelps clan have law degrees. Got to ask, why?

  20. All fingers crossed, I think this lad signifies the rising generation.
I think that if I were God and saw those Westboro signs I would sue!!

  21. Fabulous tweet:

    Hugo Rifkind ‏@hugorifkind

Still not sure why I should consider any religion’s view on gay marriage any more pertinent than I would, say, Lego’s view on gay marriage.

  22. CoasterMan 19 May 2012, 5:19pm

All I have to say is “YOU GO BOY!” You have my eternal gratitude and when you get old enough Im gonna buy you a few rounds of shots to say thank you! =)

  23. Hahaha! Stick that in your font, Westboro!

  24. No responsible parent would place a nine year old child in a position to become a target by these rabid lunatics.

A child of that age is directed by the parent and follows the parents lead in a situation involving other adults. It was a rotten thing for her to do to her son and if she herself protested the matter it would be fine. Instead she used a child and placed him in a position of attracting verbal abuse from these scumbags.

    Not good parenting.

The westbro baptist church are a lunatic cult. Stand up to them yes. Put nine year olds in the firing line and you are as bad as they are.

This kind of parenting – treating a child as an equal or adult partner when they are in fact a child hints at emotional incest.

The kid has guts, the mother is either an idiot or a coward.

Would YOU send a nine year old to contend with a bunch of verbally abusive lunatics?

    Hope not.

  25. This little boy with his 9 years old may teach big time to those bigots what religions is really about. It is about love.

  26. That’s right little man… GOD HATES NO ONE! So proud of you, and your Mom for bringing you up right…

  27. and a child shall lead them …………..

  28. happy and gay kid 5 Oct 2013, 3:21pm
