By lesbian I mean non-trans lesbians, I’d like to see a pageant with women like that :D

Sounds…like progress, I guess. Calling a transgender pageant “gay” runs into semantic issues though. At first I wondered if it might have been a cynical parody of gay people as being presumably gender bent.

    1. It’s not transgender, it’s transvestite, as in drag and cross dressing, not hormones and gender therapy.

Good point. I must admit that while I endeavour sensitivity, I do not fully understand the various issues.

Progress indeed for a country that criminalized homosexuality in the early 1990′s before reversing that decision in 2008. Belize and Guyana take note.

  4. Hmm. Surely a ‘Miss Gay’ competition should be for gay women?

On the one hand it may signal a new approach to diversity, but on the other hand it reinforces tired stereotypes and keeps the concept of ‘gay’ firmly back in the 1950s.

Without dropping a clanger like Germaine Greer many transvestites have a stereotypical view of what a woman should look like and its usually of the Joan Collins/Stephanie Beecham/Dynasty variety.

Presumably they’re just the ones you notice?
