I feel sorry for the priest, because of the troulbe he is now in, and for his parishioners who will now have to do without him. It all seems like much ado about nothing to me. Probably somebody else ( not the priest himself) put the stick with those images into the computer, in order to make a point about the priest involved (for example, to ”out ” him publically as a gay man to his parishioners). It was certainly unappropriate, and a terrible thing to do to this priest. This affair shows that it is almsot impossible to be a priest nowadays, and that there still exists too much needless public sensitivity about the possible sexual orientation, or even passing private interests, of a clergyman.

There is no “needless public sensitivity” regarding gay priests.
The are normal people just like the rest of us. What DOES get up our noses though is the hypocrisy of these people who bitterly decry and attack homosexuality on the one hand, yet knowingly remain in the church. The sheer brass neck of these tossers is simply intolerable.
The words “greenhouse” and “stones” spring to mind.

      1. Commander Thor 29 Apr 2012, 5:37pm

        *glass houses

    2. I think that most of would agree that he was caught out. The fact the computer was also stolen also send alarm belles ringing. He has no one else to blame but himself except he is too cowardly to take responsibility because if he did, he knows what the RC CHurch would do! Don’t be so blinkered!

    3. What a load of speculation – making up a story to explain an incident is the basis of all religions and it is an act of foolishness to make up a conspiracy theory about this without one shred of evidence (empirical or circumstantial). I could equally postulate that Sean Brady didn’t like him and planted the stuff so that he could get rid of him – that too fits the facts as much as your daft theory. I don’t know what happened, neither do you – but making up stuff is not the way to discover what happened and I doubt we will ever find that out.

There is only public sensitivity about the possible sexual orientation of a priest because of the preachings of the organisation of which that priest is a member – hoist by his own petard is my response.

    4. You make some important points here. Whilst most of the pink community is (quite rightly) focussed on the hypocrisy of the intolerant catholic church and the enormous worldwide damage it does, some of its clergy members are probably victims of that intolerance themselves. Gay priests who don’t participate in the intolerant rhetoric – and I have seen no evidence that this particular priest does that or has even ever done so in the past – may themselves ultimately form the motor behind the reforms which the catholic church urgently needs to undergo.

And this is indeed much ado about nothing, an incident which should have led merely to a bit of a laugh from his audience at the inadvertent false start to his presentation followed by business as usual and probably no-one outside that room even hearing about it.

  2. It is a shame that the Catholic church is so homophobic that he can’t just come out and carry on. Perhaps that would be the best thing for him to do anyway – even if he couldn’t carry on as a Catholic priest he could at least stop living a lie and perhaps minister to the gay community or carry on his work in some other way.

  3. I can just see the headline of the Craggy Island
    mail !!

  4. Robert in S. Kensington 29 Apr 2012, 5:20pm

I find this bizarre. If the result of this case is inconclusive, then why would this priest have to go away for a while if he’s innocent of anything? Makes no sense. Something is not right about it.

    1. You don’t say!

    2. No I it makes perfect sense to me. Even if he had nothing to do with it nobody will believe it, people like scandal too much. It may not even have been his decision to leave, but his superiors who want to shunt him off because they think that it will stop wagging tongues.

The fact that the RC Church were allowed to swoop in before the police got to the laptop, then it’s supposed ‘theft’, and his explanation that he destroyed the flash-drive through some ‘selfless’ act that he didn’t want anybody else to be exposed to such images of Sodom and Gomorrah stinks.

But what I find so frustrating is that I don’t think they even want to know the truth because it could be too uncomfortable. Just like child abuse within the ranks, this doesn’t fit in with their little world so they turn their backs on it yet again.

      1. Excellent post.

      2. @Paul

We have agreed and disagreed a lot on this story. I think largely we come from the same standpoint – that knowing the truth about what happened is in the best interests of children, society and the RC church (and the individual priest).

Unfortunately that is not possible due to the destruction of the data stick by the priest and the “burglary” – which may or may not be an honest explanation of the events that occurred with the particular laptop.

I find it frustrating that there have been 3 events which just don’t seem to add up individually (and together seem even more bizarre). Firstly, the event where the pornography was displayed is unusual and the reactions to it seemed unusual (from reporting, although I guess few people would know how they would react in these circumstances, whether error, deliberate or malicious). Secondly the destruction of the data stick and thirdly the burglary.

Surely, the RC church would want resolution and to be seen to be doing the right …

        1. … thing rather than end up with an “inconclusive” outcome.

It could all be completely ‘innocent’ although the way the story has panned out does make one curious as to how an organisation could allow this to happen.

I know many churches have in the past decade completely revamped their child protection procedures. I reviewed one organisations (not RC church) policies as one of a team of independent child protection professionals with no church connection. I was impressed with the detail and the plans they had put in place and some improvements were suggested. I am not aware if the RC church have been so rigorous, or if they have whether the policy actually happens in practice. Given the history, I would suggest it is one organisation that urgently needs to show it takes this matter seriously and has people that can advise urgently if a potentially concerning event occurs.

  5. Commander Thor 29 Apr 2012, 5:25pm

“In my shock and upset and in my concern to ensure that the images would never be shown again, I destroyed it later that evening.”

    Brilliant!

    1. Paddyswurds 29 Apr 2012, 5:29pm

…and inconveniently my laptop was stole a couple of days later while all other Computer equipment was ignored……Yea Right……….

      1. The images were just ‘resting’ in his data stick!!!

      2. Paddyswurds 30 Apr 2012, 12:55pm

        errata….stolen*** obv.

    2. After having a good hard farewell wank or three?

  6. Plain as a pikestaff he was responsible and and covered it up. What else is new in the RCC. Vilest organisation in the world.

  7. I feel sorry for the predicament this guy is in, but on the other hand it’s difficult to feel anything but contempt for LGBT who work for and support this organisation.

  8. An extreme analogy maybe, but isn’t this a bit like being Jewish and working for the SS?

  9. As false as Waghorn, and he was nineteen times falser than the devil.

  11. The man was caught out and I suspect that this is an massive RC cover up! If he is as innocent as he claims, why else would he be taking a break?

    1. Robert in S. Kensington 30 Apr 2012, 2:53pm

Like they did with the molesters, shunted them off to another town to cover it up hoping it will go away. They’ve been doing it for decades and it isn’t a recent phenomenon. The Irish molestation scandal was a real eye opener resulting in the Vatican ambassador being recalled. We should do the same with that ninny Mennini, boot him out and sever all ties with the Vatican.

  12. Porn is porn. Even if it was straight porn he should get exactly the same treatment. Which is expulsion. Regardless of his sexual orientation, if you are a priest and you accidentally present a load of porn to your community, there isn’t much you can do to recover! If they bring him back after a while then that’s just another example of how crap the RCC is.

  13. Mumbo Jumbo 29 Apr 2012, 6:27pm

They’ve moved him to another parish?

Anybody would think he’d raped some children.

    1. Mumbo you must have really understanding employers if you could show 16 porn images to an audinece expecting an informational presentation and not have to worry about any repercussions!

Morale of the story is: Keep your wanking material spearate from your work memory stick! :)

      1. Paddyswurds 30 Apr 2012, 1:01pm

I think mumbo jumbo was being ironic…are you American?
However he hasn’t been moved to another parish yet . If you reread the story, you will see he has been sidelined for now and will probably be sent to an overseas parish, maybe somewhere he was never heard of, as is the practice of the RCC…..

    2. would that be a big deal for the RC?

  14. Full-facial as well.

  15. He recognised it was a serious matter, but felt it was important that he destroyed the offending material ….

    Hmmmmmm

    1. wonder if any of his choristers have any pertinent comments to make – how very, very unfortunate that his ‘lap’ top went missing – I truly empathise with him.

  16. I don’t believe for a moment that the projecting of adult images was a nefarious act.

I do question the rushing out in a flap and the hysterical destroying of the memory stick – It plays so much like a cheesy sitcom story of a cover up by embarrassed gay man who was in the closet and got found out.

Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas. I have no sympathy for him. And I suspect this sabbatical will lead to his hanging up his dog collar.

    Oh well.

    1. i think that maybe one or two parents may of had concerns about the images that were shown, probably hoping that they did not appear in them

  17. Dr Robin Guthrie 29 Apr 2012, 11:27pm

    Oh for f sake.

Just “come out” to yourself and stop this hiding behind robes and bloody religion.

    Have a wank.

Its perfectly natural, lest your wish your bollocks hang like udders.

Ignore the sexually oppressed old men at the head of your cult.

  18. What, another gay Catholic priest, well what do you expect if you don’t let them get married and make them wear dresses and funny hats. At least he is not one of the Catholic pedophile priest who rape and abuse children.

    1. Erm….I don’t think he’s gay because he’s forced into celibacy. He’s forced himself into celibacy by joining the priesthood because he can’t cope with being gay. Basically he’s been told since childhood, probably by people such as himself, that being gay is something to be ashamed of.

Possibly another reason why The Vatican is so worried about the push for LGBT equal rights. If there are no gay people left feeling ashamed, then they lose a lot of possible recruits to the priesthood.

  19. Would be good if all priests left Ireland!

    1. David Waite 30 Apr 2012, 8:35am

It’s.. It’s.. a vision.. I see the sainted Patrick arriving at the emerald isle.. He’s carrying a dogwood crozier.. It touches Irish soil and bursts into flower.. In the middle distance is a writhing mass of venomous serpents.. They’re -They’re turning into priests! Some of them are becoming super-venomous! OMG! So the snakes actually never left Ireland!1!

      1. One has to wonder if the “snakes” Patrick saw in his visions were of the trouser variety ;-)

    2. Robert in S. Kensington 30 Apr 2012, 2:55pm

      And the UK!

  20. The Catholic Church’s ability to get away with the most flagrant cover-up – “stolen” laptop, my arse! – even in the UK is actually quite shocking.

    1. Robert in S. Kensington 30 Apr 2012, 2:46pm

i’ve said this before but I think this priest hid the laptop and then stated it was stolen because of incriminating evidence. The catholic cult is not known for honesty or telling the truth. They are masters of deception and covering up.

  21. Seems better marking or filing of memory sticks is in order :)

    1. At least color-code ‘em or something. Maybe blue for the private stuff, as in “my balls are…” A good mnemonic helps keeps things organized and tidy.

  22. As others have suggested, I don’t think the Church cares what actually happened (and I think it’s pretty clear the guy mixed up his porn stash with his pastoral work). In typical fashion, it’s simply trying to make the priest, and his story, disappear.

  23. darkmoonman 30 Apr 2012, 6:28pm

Sorry, but I hate hypocrisy, even if it does wear a dress 1/7th of the time.

  24. Patrick Mc Crossan 1 May 2012, 12:16am

Im sorry but Im a gay catholic and Fr McVeigh did himself or the church any good with his actions.

If hes gay straight or not sure having images on screen in such circumstances were not acceptable.

To have gone away afterwards and his explanation that he destroyed the flash-drive makes him guilty in my eyes of destroying the evidence.

If he did not put the images on the flash-drive that could have been proven.

Fr Mc Veigh left the parish of his own accord and I hope he stays away.

His own personal actions are what is wrong here.

He has no right to have porn images on a flash-drive that he also uses to make a presentation to children.

Nothing anti-gay here Fr Mc Veigh has clearly very clearly been caught out simple as that.

  25. Keith SIMPSON 2 May 2012, 5:39pm

They’re ALL at it…one way or another.
If it’s not kids, it’s Reverend Mother in the convent up the road, or the ‘housekeeper’.
    Vow of celibacy me artse..!
    Keith.
