A gay US marine returning from a ten month tour of duty in Afghanistan was greeted with a marriage proposal in San Diego, California this week.

Navy veteran Cory Huston proposed to Avarice Guerrero at Camp Pendleton on Tuesday, LGBT Weekly reports.

Mr Guerrero said he was “blown away” at the proposal by his partner, who was discharged from the navy under the now-repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

“I was shocked that after all we’d been through, he would honestly want to spend the rest of his life with someone like me.”

According to the paper, Mr Huston had spent two hours chain-smoking and rehearsing his speech for what is one of the first on-base engagements of its kind.

It is not known in which state the pair will marry.

The heart-warming proposal bears some similarities with the video Homecoming, released the following day to raise support for marriage equality in England and Wales.

Mike Buonaiuto’s short film features British soldiers returning from war, with one receiving a marriage proposal from his partner.
