Plea to save London’s Black Cap pub

A plea has been issued to respond today to a planning application which would see London’s Black Cap pub, a long-standing gay venue in Camden, turned into flats.

A PinkNews.co.uk reader writes: “My partner and I were shocked and saddened to see an application to close the historic Black Cap pub – which we have been visiting for 40 years – and convert it into flats; with terraces.

“This pub has certainly existed since 1751 when it was known as the Mother Black Cap.

“It has a proud history as a lesbian and gay pub (one of the very few left) and over the years has offered hours of superb entertainment… with Mrs Shufflewick, Jean Fredricks, Regina Fong and many more.

“To enjoy those powerful performers, alas no longer with us, it was necessary to arrive on Sunday mornings long before the act was on, such was the crush.

“And, indeed, this tradition of entertainment continues at the pub to day. But this pub is much more.

“It has always been welcoming to the wider community […] This pub is a proud part of Camden history and, today, on the tourist trail. On many a warm day tourists can be found, having following their guide books.

“Are we to stand by and allow the destruction of this fond landmark? Surely not.”

Any comments must be sent to Camden planning by tomorrow 26 April, regarding application number 2012 / 1444 / P.
