  1. God Bless this young man for coming out with the intention of helping other young people come out and be who they are, gay. God makes and loves all LGBT people. We need more like him to set the example for others who to come out and to show them they can lead happy and productive lives being open and fee, to be who they are.

God has nothing to do with it.

I don’t believe in God, but I do respect the right of others to do so (as long as they don’t use it as an excuse for homophobia). I don’t think your comment was very respectful. It is hypocritical to preach about equality then try to put down those members of the LGBT community (and straight allies) who are believers.

God is, whatever you fear right now. That’s why its such a destructive concept, Christians spray their fears (phobias) around like pissing dogs instead of getting the therapy they need and the society jumps on the bandwagon.

I don’t think Spanner1960′s comment is at all disrespectful, it is simply honest and sane…

          1. There are uses of the word “God” that are not intended to identify a “personal god”.

However, a “personal god” usually seems to be what “God”-sprayers intend to identify.

          2. Er, no we don’t. Some of us actually takes the message of love and tolerance seriously and do not spray anything on anyone.

A little respect for the diversity that exists–also in the Christian community, please.

I was not being disrespectful. I was merely demonstrating an opinion. If they think we are made by some fictitious deity, who am I to complain unless they start forcing their beliefs on me.

    2. Thank God for people like Paul Iacono, and Anderson Cooper, and Matthew Mitchum, and all the other openly gay Olympians; all of whom are young AND very publicly visible. Even today, in the Twenty-first Century, this still takes a LOT of courage just coming out to our parents…. let alone the whole world! Kudos, young man. A very brave heart!

I have no idea who this person is as my days of watching MTV are long gone! However, this is a positive story and as he can use his ‘celebrity’ status on equality issues then good on him

I’d never heard of him either but then I’m well over 30 and haven’t watched MTV in years. The point is that he probably is well known to teenagers and his coming out like this will show them that there’s nothing wrong with being gay.

  10. We need more high profile “coming out” stories. The more gay people are seen, the more “normal” we appear, the more we become just ordinary citizens, no more “different” than is a left-handed person (once lefties were forced to use their right hands, as they were “un-natural” – viz. The King’s Speech).
