The Australian soap-opera ‘Neighbours’ has featured its first ever gay kiss in its 27 year history, in an episode which aired on Monday.

The characters Chris Pappas and Aidan Foster, played respectively by James Mason and Bob Morley, locked lips during a party scene at Ramsay Street, where the drama is set.

The public reaction has been largely positive, as gathered from social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Others, however, lamented the fact that the kiss wasn’t really up-close, but rather left in the background of the scene. Reacting to this, Susan Bower, executive producer of the show, said that they were keen not to scandalise the kiss. “It’s not sensationalist or token – we are very proud of the way we have done this,” she said.

There have been two other gay storylines on the show before, between Lana (Bridget Neval) and Sky (Stephanie McIntosh) in 2004, and between Macca (John Morris) and Doug (Terence Donovan) in the nineties. But, neither of those plotlines featured an explicit gay kiss.
