Timothy Challen should have known better than to egg people on when they are high on drink. Unfortunately this seems to have all the hallmarks of a typical booze-fueled night on the town. The article doesn’t mention how much Challen had to drink but he had been goading the people who attacked him for a while. The sad fact is that drink lowers peoples’ inhibitions and these things will continue to happen.

  2. These people deserved to be punished to the full extent of the law. Regardless of what this guy did or said they attacked a man while he was down on the ground. There can be no defence for that

    1. These red arrows intrigue me. For those who have can anyone explain why?

If the story had said “he shouldn’t be allowed in here – he’s gay!” *THUMP* instead of “‘he shouldn’t be allowed in here – he is not gay” then I’m sure we’d all be up in arms. So why the difference of opinion? Thuggery is thuggery.

One could almost classify it as a heterophobic ‘hate-crime’.
The law is the law, and what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Just because we have laws protecting us does not give us the right to abuse other people.

  3. They drank *how* much??

    1. Between 20 and 30 double vodkas???? That is incredible. One wonders why they were served so much.

      1. Or how they were able to walk never mind almost beat someone to death

        1. David Myers 11 Apr 2012, 2:17am

Did you read the article? They did not beat him “to death”. Nonetheless they need to be charged with assault and he should be charged with something though I’m not sure what. The bar staff should have called the police when he continued to harrass their customers through the window. If we expect queer bashers to be prosecuted we should support their prosecution. The can plead extreme provokation during sentencing.

          1. David Myers 11 Apr 2012, 2:19am

            Or “almost to death”.

      2. 20 single vodkas is unimaginable, let alone doubles!

  4. This tool brought on his own beat down ! and is a homophobic moron who started the whole thing! they deserve some probation and community service but not jail time! the Moron who goated them is just a loser.

He may well have deserved a slap, but three people kicking seven bells of crap out of someone on the floor is totally unacceptable.

    2. I agree. Gays are constant victimes of daily hate, they cant be blamed when they snap after being provoked.

Oh look gay people can behave like drunken thugs too shocker. Really, this isn’t even a story worthy of this paper. Its just another tale of drunken yobs fighting in the street. A variation on which can be seen every saturday night. Nothing to see here, move along

    1. Spanner1960 10 Apr 2012, 11:19am

      It’s a gay story. Simples.
Funny how you react because for once it doesn’t put LGBT people in a good, oppressed, victimised or persecuted light.

  6. Hang on if a straight man can use the “gay rape panic” defence then why can’t we use the “we have had it up to here” defence???

    1. theGentleWarrior 11 Apr 2012, 3:28pm

“We have had it up to here!” I laughed very hard at reading that.
      Nicely put Sir

  7. 20-30 double vodkas, up 2 bottles of vodka and still standing?

  8. Spanner1960 10 Apr 2012, 11:24am

The Westgate is one of my locals, and it’s more of a cocktail bar than a pub, and very good it is too. I’m sure they would want to dissociate themselves from this affair in any way possible.

  9. violence quite often occurs due to heavy drinking, so i wouldnt expect makers of bodinghtons to be shocked at such association, although they might be pleased with “this ‘generous’ promotion”

  10. Provocation is no justification for assault. As someone else has said the law is the law and must be applied equally regardless of the sexual orientation of the assailants. Also, three against one is not a fair fight.

  11. They were very pissed and they reacted violently to provocation…three against one…jail em. Being provoked they should have called the police, but they took the law into their own hands. If the roles were reversed and this was Str8 people beating up on a Gay person we would be baying for blood.

    1. 2 of the 3 of the attackers were women who are statistically smaller and weaker then men which were being harassed all night. A jury may think that 2 women attacking a man in self defence is justified. we will have to wait and find out.

      1. David Myers 11 Apr 2012, 2:21am

Irrelevant and sexist. So a woman cannot injure a man? Get a grip.

        1. not really, its based on statistics its why women are referred to as the “fairer sex”, Its much less likely that a woman on her own could injure a man seriously enough to fight them off. I can totally see a jury sympathizing with the 2 ladies who felt like they were going to be attacked by this man, in law you are allowed to throw the first punch in self defence and you are allowed to act in the defence of another. At the end of the day it all comes down to how the jury see it.

  12. whether gay or straight, drunkenness and physical attacks still manage to be prominent in the primitive society we all appear to be living in. this world has a long way to go before we even reach the edges of civility. life on this earth is surely a tortuous work in progress.

    1. nothingopetty 10 Apr 2012, 4:42pm

Look, I’m going to admit that a had a bit of a thrill hearing we got some of our own back. It shouldn’t have happened and some punishment is deserved, but I’m stll saying Yay in my heart.

      1. It’ll teach him to leave us alone at least.

  13. Nothing has been said about Challen threatening to stab the two girls up. He should be charged with threatening behavior, He sat outside the westgate waiting for the two girls to come out alone what he didn’t realise was a burly guy would be with them, He is your typical women beater, he would hit (stab) a bird but would he square up to a geezer (doubt it) unless he was drunk. The likes of him make me ashamed to say im from Gloucester. What you have to realise if Tony was not with these girls we could be reading of two stabbings in Gloucester.
