S4C, Channel 4’s Welsh sister channel, has launched a new version of the popular show Mr and Mrs, which will feature a gay couple for the first time.

Berwyn Rowlands and Grant Vidgen are one of several couples taking part in the new Sion a Sian programme, hosted by Stifyn Parri and Heledd Cynwal. The format involves contestants trying to win money by proving how much they know about each other.

Mr Rowlands, 45, who has been with Mr Vidgen for almost 25 years, said he thinks it’s about time a same-sex couple appeared on such a show in an age of civil partnerships.

Mr Rowlands, who runs The Festivals Company, said: “We were approached to take part and I thought, ‘Why not?’ I had no desire to be on a game show really, in fact the thought was absolutely terrifying, but I agreed because I thought the time was right.

“This is the 21st century after all. Civil partnerships have been around now for several years and Sion a Sian is a celebration of two people cementing their relationship so our decision to go on it was a political gesture, I suppose. There has never been a gay couple on a show like this.”

The show – which kicked off last night – is similar to long-running quiz show Mr and Mrs, which was recently seen on ITV1 hosted by Philip Schofield and Fern Britton.
