The Titanic still fascinates us as the ship was a microcosm of early-20th century society with it’s social stratification, taboos and restrictions. James Cameron’s film appealed to everybody with it’s high budget, hi-tech special effects wowing male audiences and the forbidden love between Rose and Jack appealing to female audiences.
Rose, a young woman at the time when women did not even have the vote was being shipped to America for what was practically an arranged marriage when she falls for a guy from the lower decks. In those days such love was almost as taboo as homosexuality was then.
It makes me wonder if any gay love stories were played out amongst the 2,218 people on board the Titanic as she said towards her appointment with that iceberg.
