Anti-gay MP is Queensland’s first female parliamentary speaker

  1. While the ideal would of course be to not have people like this, which such ill-informed and cruel opinions, voted into parliament at all…at least as Speaker her voting power is neutralised. There is very recent civil partnership legislation in Queensland that now hangs somewhat in the balance following the state election, so if the Speakership makes her one less person who can vote to repeal that right, then, good.

    1. I agree. She had been a shadow minister before the election, so in one sense she is being side-lined since she will not be able to speak on any matter and will not be a minister. The new premier has, in the past, not been all that anti-gay, but his party is. We will need to wait and see what he does and whether he repeals the bill allowing gay civil unions.

  5. Well isn’t that precious.

Australia has it’s very own slice of America now in Queensland.

And, by the way Ms. Fionna, the two FOUNDERS of Exodus left the “ministry”, came BACK OUT as gay, and lived together as a couple until the untimely death of one of them. The other, Michael Busse, is a good friend of mine is a full time gay rights advocate who works tirelessly to try to undo the damage he did in forming the Exodus. His facebook is “ex-ex gay”.

And just to further show that this woman doesn’t know what she’s talking about, Alan Chambers, the current president of Exodus International, recently admitted that he doesn’t think ANYONE changes their sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual. Exodus is in the process of shifting focus from telling people that they can change from homosexual to heterosexual to telling them that they can help them learn to avoid homosexual “behavior” and, in some cases, to live satisfactorily happy in a straight marriage.

    BIG difference!

I would be surprised if Simpson still believes in this nonsense. Exodus has been a total failure. It’s more to do with scamming vulnerable, frightened people for a fee. The day it can prove a straight man can be converted to a gay man, then maybe, just maybe they’ll have some credence, but until then, it remains just a fraudulent business that should be shut down.

“The time must come inevitably when mankind shall surmount the imbecility of religion, as it has surmounted the imbecility of religion’s ally, magic. It is impossible to imagine this world being really civilized so long as so much nonsense survives. In even its highest forms religion embraces concepts that run counter to all common sense. It can be defended only by making assumptions and adopting rules of logic that are never heard of in any other field of human thinking”. Mencken. Fiona Simpson is a homopobic bigot pure and simple and she can take her repulsive religious doctrine and shove it.

Despite its laid back image and the Mardi Gras, Australia has no recognition of same sex relationships, has a law banning the recognition of same sex marriages and generally treats gay people poorly under the law. Ordinary Australian guys have quite a homophobic streak as well as their elected politicians show.

As an expat Aussie I recommend LGBT people should stay away from Australia and spend your tourist dollars in less homophobic countries when you vacation.

This is a complete disgrace. The idea that a person who holds views about homosexuality that can, at best, be described as verging on the lunatic and who uses her Christianity as some sort of justification for her homophobia (Christ himself would be appalled) can be appointed to such a prominent public office is a disgrace to Queensland in particular and to Australia in general. What is even more worrying is that she managed to find a sufficiently large number of people prepared to vote her into the state legislature in the first place.

    @….
….I wonder has she cottoned on yet to the reason why they have made her Speaker of the House. It would seem to me that this was a very shrewd move as it effectively silences this homophobic, racist shrew. Speaker doesn’t get to vote except as a tie breaker and that is as rare as hens teeth in most democracies.

‘Gorbals Mick’ Michael Martain was not exactly pro-gay either but that didn’t stop him from being Speaker of our Houses of Parliament – even though he was a member of the then ruling Labour Party. Fortunately a speaker has to be impartial and as Court mentioned, she cannot veto legislation. Betty Boothroyd who was a member of the Labour Party is remembered as an excellent speaker during the previous Conservative government.
