  1. This is a difficult one!

People are entitled to their opinions on religious grounds, no matter how offensive or bigoted they are. I don’t follow a religion, but it’s too hard to convince someone that their faith is wrong.

I think she should have been allowed to not attend the show. If they had gone to an anti-gay show, we would have supported a gay person refusing to attend, so it HAS to be an equal attitude towards this.

    1. I feel the need to correct you: “Religious beliefs are not a basis upon which to affirm or deny civil rights.”

RE: the law suet, what kind of monetary damages do you think should be awarded to her? what was a hour of her time worth?

      1. Not to mention she is a teacher in the theatre and dram department. Its not uncommon for teachers to be expected to attend major events hosted by their department and failing to do so can be considered neglection of duty. Being a teacher isn’t just about teaching, its about supporting the school your in. Nobody asked her to like the performance, just to attend it. If the performance attacked her personally, I can understand her not attending, but it didn’t. It wasn’t an anti-religion play, it was just a play with gay themes. She should grow up and fulfil her duty to her department and school.

        1. I wonder if she consulted her priest on this one cuz I’m pretty sure the Bible doesn’t say anything about watching a gay-themed play being a sin. Although I’ve never read it cover to cover so I don’t really know. Then again, I’m guessing she’s never done either.

      2. ‘ what was a hour of her time worth?’

she will claim damages for emotional distress rather then for loss of actual costs

      3. How is she denying people’s civil rights by not attending something?

    2. She’s a prude, and therefore in the wrong department. It has nothing to do with religion.

  2. I suspect that, for her to win this, she has to demonstrate that her religion requires her to be homophobic. That it has to be a basic and fundamental concept of the religion. I would LOVE to see a christian stand up and say that hatred of LGBT people is key to christianity. Please do.

If it is disputed that her religion does not require her to be a homophobe (different from, say, wearing a head covering of some sort like a turban which is key) it opens the door to anyone saying that anything is against any belief.

My beliefs cannot be measured, or proven, or tested sincere. If she was to win her case the precedent would be set that my beliefs make me immune from whatever I wish to be immune from!

    1. Religion doesn’t prohibit homosexuality it prohibits homosexual sex… actually it prohibits lots of sorts of sex!

      1. Makes you wonder why anyone can think that the people who wrote the religious texts in question actually had any sort of useful insight on the subject. The people who wrote the damned buy-bull couldn’t explain why the sun rose. As if they had any sort of knowledge on human sexuality – they were still grovelling over invisible sky djinns and just one small step away from throwing rocks at the moon.

        1. Exactly! Suspending reason to fit in with superstitions.

      2. stan James 30 Mar 2012, 1:48am

yes -t eh catholic church even prohibits masterbation

But looks the other way when their unmarried unfullfilled priests do it to little alter boys.

        As a warmup to…………………………….

    2. in america your right to religious beliefs have much more weight then here, so she might have some legal standing. most likely they will settle out of court, provided that she will be reasonable with the demand

  3. Get real. She’s in the theatre department. She either needs to attend or needs to find a job at a more conservative school if that’s her stance. Conversely, you shouldn’t apply for a job at a conservative school if you’re gay. Use your heads!

  4. Hi, I am Franck. I would like to know if one can call himself homosexuel if he does’nt have homosexuel sex. What make someone gay? To be atracted by men or to have sex with men? I am living in a no so gay friendly country and as a man whot has feelings for other men I don’t have oportunities to talk with other people about that. I try some time to follow you guys what u are talking about here but I am not always sure to undestand every thing. ( may be because I am from a frensh speaking country but also I am always sure to have the correct meaning of concepts like : gay, homosexuality,…

    1. Hey. Being homosexual ‘requires’ some degree of physical and emotional attraction to someone of the same sex. The actual act of sex isn’t necessary for these emotions and so, at least as far as I’m concerned, isn’t necessary to consider oneself gay. For example, I’m a virgin. I haven’t had sex, gay or otherwise yet. That doesn’t mean I lose the right to call myself gay, because that’s what I am. I’m pretty sure there are other forums out there to discuss this though and it is kind of off topic :).

Going back to the news topic, she is a teacher in the theatre and drama department. Its not uncommon for teachers to be expected to attend major events hosted by their department and failing to do so can be considered neglection of duty. Im not sure how she can win this case without proving that her religion requires her to be homophobic and she would of therefore been harmed by attending the play, which it was her duty as a teacher in her field to do.

      1. stan James 30 Mar 2012, 1:50am

ESp when in eg NYC most of the actors are gay.

I have many gay friends yet cannot get any explanation for this one.

I’m wondering if maybe shes a lesbian in denial.

        1. Funny then how in the UK it seems most actors are not gay, isn’t it?

    2. Franck – I’ll try to make it easy for you. Imagine you’re speeding down a highway at 90mph and there is a billboard on the left of the road advertising wonderbras with a stunning female model wearing next to nothing.
On the right hand side of the road there is a similar billboard advertising Calvin Klein briefs featuring a buff guy wearing next to nothing.
You only have time to take in one of these billboards as you’re in the passenger seat. Which way does your head turn?
Assuming you’re not actually considering buying the clothes, the answer should be pretty clear. If you were staring at the hunky guy, (assuming you’re a guy yourself) it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re gay or at the very least bicurious.
Sex doesn’t come into it, your innate sexuality is whatever gender you’re physically/emotionally attracted to when there’s no-one else around to judge you. Sometimes admitting it to yourself is the tricky part. Does that answer your question?

  5. Teachers at many faith schools are required to attend religious services. It is likely their failure to attend would result in disciplinary action. This teacher’s reason for not attending the performance was bigoted and deserved the negative reaction. She is entitled to her beliefs but perhaps a different career would be a good idea.

“Gay Show,” isn’t that a redundancy? Showbiz has been gay turf since shows regularly included a ventriloquist. :)

  7. Father Dougal 29 Mar 2012, 11:09pm

Are there any plays that don’t have themes that may offend someone’s religious beliefs? Murder, prostitution, gang crime, adultery, cruelty of all sorts, these are common theatrical themes. If she singles out gays, she’s being disingenuous.

    1. yes but some christians reserve the right to pick n choose as to what might offend their religious beliefs. they treat bible like swedish buffet

  8. Hmmm, would you hire a chef that won’t cook pork? Would you hire a drama teacher that won’t tackle certain themes?

I think she got off lightly, and they should counterclaim to have her fired, if that’s possible.

    1. ‘would you hire a chef that won’t cook pork?’

yes in a vegan or halal/kosher restaurant

  9. chris lowcase 29 Mar 2012, 11:24pm

‘religious reasons’ like how jewish people dont eat pork. its not the same thing. i would have no problem inviting a jewish person to a dinner party but i would meet problems employing a teacher who wont accept homosexuality.

  10. THERE IS NO HONOR IN BEING A BIGOTOR RACIST, JUST IGNORANCE AND MALICE, AND HIPPOCRICY, AND INSTIGATED ATROCITIES, LISTEN LADY, GAY PEOPLE SIT IN AUDITORIUMS AND WATCH 99% OF FILMS SHOWN IN ANY SHCOOL THAT IS HETERSEXUAL FILMS, AND THEY ARE GAY CHILDREN AND ADULTS, I MYSELF WOUD PERFER TO SEE A GAY FILM, SCHOOLS SHOULD SHOW BOTH GAY FILMS AND HETERSEXUAL FILMS, THEIR IS A BIG WORLD OF PEOPLE OUT THEIR , EVERYBODY IS NOT WHITE WITH BLUE EYES, THEIR ARE OTHER RACES, ;YOU SHOW CARTOONS WITH DIFFERENT COLORS OF FACES, AND SO SHOULD YOU BOTH AND DIFFERENT GENDERS ESPECIALLY IN CARTOONS SO KIDS CAN LEARN EASILY, AND NO OFFENSIVELY THE TRUTH , THAT OTHERS HAVE FAMILIES TOO THAT THEY LOVE, AND AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT BOTHERING YOU ARE OTHERS THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OF HETRO SHOULD BE, KINDNESS MUST BE THE BASIC FOUNDATIONS FOR ALL FAMILIES, NO MATTER WHAT RACE , COLOR, GENDER OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION, IT WOULD VERY HELPFUL FOR CHILDREN AN ADULTS TO KNOW AND ;UNDERSTAND THAT

    1. People may be more inclined to read your posts if you format that sensibly.

      1. We tell Carrie this all the time and yet she still posts in caps! I can’t bother to read her comments, even if they are valid!

        1. It is a shame, because her comments are often valid – she doesn’t deserve all the thumbs down she gets. Unfortunately though, my eyes glaze over when I see the big fields of caps :(

  11. It’s your f%£k!ng job. Get on with it. And the irony of her being a theatre and dance teacher is not lost either.

  12. IS EVERYBODY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE NEWS AN THE HISTORIC FINDINGS IN MAINE ABOUT THE CONSPIRACIES OF THE REPUBLICAN BIGOTS HEADED BY NOM THAT THEY HAD SECRETLY WRITTEN DOWN AGAINST WOMEN GAY PEOPLE AND PEOPLE OF COLORS, HISPANICS AND OTHERS, THEY PURPOSELY WHERE RECRUITING HATE RELIGIONS AND TRING TO TU;RN OTHERS INTO HATE RELIGIONS ALONG WITH PEOPLE AND FAMLIES, PITTED AGAINST ONE ANOTHER BY FALSE LIES AND DEFAMATIONS GIVEN TO THEM BY THE OCCULT RELIGIONS THEY HAD BREED LIES INTO AND BY KLANS, TYING TO HARM MASSES OF PEOPLE BY TURNING THEM ALL AGAINST EACH OTHER IN THE SAME RACES AND GENDERS, THIS CONSPIRACY WAS TOLD BY A KLAN MAN YEARS AGO AFTER BEING ARRESTED FOR MURDER OF SOME COLORED TEENS, HE TOLD THAT HE WAS APART OF A CONSPIRACY FUELED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WHICH WAS THE HEAD OF THEIR KLAN GROUP THEY TOOK ORDERS FROM, THE MAN HAD A HEAVY BEARD AND LOOK LIKE CHARLES MANSION, BUT HE WAS TELLING THE TRUTH AND THE DOCUMENTS THEY FOUND IN MAINE IS PROOF OF THAT ON PAPER,

    1. REpublicans in America are our own Islam. Along with the catholic and some evangelical churches to whom they have sold out for power and money.

Too bad they wont drink Jim Jones cool aid

  13. Just another bigot. Or gaybe she got what some girls claim they get on You tube watching cute young boys dancing and making out

    “girl Boner”

  14. It would be interesting to know if this woman would have refused to attend a performance of Euripides’ The Bacchae on the grounds it depicts a powerful pre-Christian god on stage.

    Somehow, I think not.

  15. GingerlyColors 30 Mar 2012, 7:22am

Ah! Diddums! Between 5 and 16 years of age teachers forced me to do all sorts of things that I did not want to do. Maybe I should sue them for making me attend maths, English, PE, history, and geography lessons.

  16. I would like to see her contract of employment – does in contain clear stipulations that as a drama/dance teacher she should support or attend the school’s dramatic efforts? Would a Jewish teacher be excused from attending the school’s performance of The Merchant of Venice (and that is REALLY nasty to Jews – I suspect that the gay play she didn’t want to see wasn’t anything like as horrid to Christians)?
In general, I’d say she’s in a funny job for a conservative religious believer. I should think Iimagination and free-thinking are generally needed in theatre and dance. They were when I was doing it.

  17. I’m shocked! -10? Really?!

    I think we’re being hypocritical.

If there was a show supported by, say, The Christian Institute, and it was all about how marriage should be about one man and one woman and a gay guy refused to attend…would we say that was wrong, or would we support him?

And who cares if she didn’t attend; why would you want a bigot there anyway?

  18. douglas in canada 31 Mar 2012, 2:35am

Haha, this is so funny. In the church that I grew up in, dancing and drama were considered sinful. There’s no way we would have been allowed to participate, let alone become someone who teaches those subjects.

My parents and relatives would have just as hard a time with her choice of vocation as they would with my discovery of my gayness

    This woman is a joke

    1. Funny…yes, it seems you grew up in a very narrow-minded way and with a very narrow-mind religion. It’s a very good thing that all of Christendom isn’t like that, huh? I went to church yesterday, and we had modern music, a dramatic play event, and several dances throughout the service, all well-performed, well-chorerographed, and well-appreciated by all in attendance. I have always participated in drama, dance, and music as a part of regular worship in a Christian church, but I guess I am just one of the very fortunate and privileged people of the world! I can’t think of a more wonderful line of work for a teacher than that of reflecting the creativity and vast versatility of an amazingly diverse Creator! Why would real Christians (or anybody for that matter) want to deter someone from pursuing that as a career? Makes no sense at all…

  19. I Just wonder…if this same teacher put on a “show” about the death and ressurection of Jesus, and it were “required” for the staff at her school to attend and they chose not to, would SHE be the one being sued for “forcing” her religious beliefs on both faculty and staff? Just sayin…
