  1. Mickey Rourke was never right to play this part part!

  2. AmateurJanitor 26 Mar 2012, 12:25pm

    Thank goodness for that!!

What was Mickey Rourke thinking?? He couldn’t have played that role and I’d hate to hear his attempt at a welsh accent!!lol

Yay though… get Tom Hardy in, a much better choice!!

What did he expect at 59? A trophy?

    1. Coenie W. Kukkuk 26 Mar 2012, 12:28pm

There are plenty of “big name” British actors who can do it. Just not Hugh Grant please.

  4. Oh thank goodness.

Mickey Rourke is 25 years too old for the role.

  5. Cathy Norman 26 Mar 2012, 12:35pm

Gareth David-Lloyd… perfect for the roll…

  6. Jock S. Trap 26 Mar 2012, 12:41pm

Oh… now Tom Hardy? I would see the film. At least the age is better. Can’t see a 59 year old playing a 34 year old convincingly.

  7. Someone better looking would be a start!
I agree Tom Hardy would be amazing! Someone who can do a believable welsh accent wouldn’t hurt either, was never too sure of Mickey’s abilities there!

    1. Not sure of Mickey Rourkes acting ability full stop!

    2. Jock S. Trap 26 Mar 2012, 2:54pm

If Tom Hardy was playing him I doubt very much I would be paying much attention to the accent!! lol :oP

      1. Jock S. Trap 26 Mar 2012, 2:54pm

        Oops meant :P

  8. Yes, Tom Hardy or Gareth David-Lloyd would both be great for the part.

  9. thank god for that! Would have been a car crash, Mickey is totally wrong for the part- far too old, far too odd looking after the plastic surgery..can i echo earlier comment Gareth David Lloyd would be fab..(ianto in shorts may have meltdown)..

Tom Hardy is on my allowed list so is a welcome substitute

  11. In fairness it was Mickey’s idea to get the movie made in the first place, but casting himself was a step to far.
He was running the risk of it looking like a misconceived vanity project.
Tom Hardy is a bit more credible in the lead.

  12. Although glad he won’t be playing the role (and Tom Hardy would be brilliant), I hope Mickey Rourke is still really involved in the project – he’s really impressed me with what he’s done. Maybe he might make a better Adam Jones instead

    1. ABsolutely. He deserves credit for getting the project off the ground.

  13. Real shame… was looking forward to seeing Mickey in that. Yeah, Tom Hardy would be ideal for the part!

  14. Staircase2 26 Mar 2012, 4:20pm

Bless ya – Mickey – hope you get well soon!
But Tom Hardy be gooood! :O)

  15. I’m not a rugby person. Is Gareth Thomas’s life interesting enough for a film anyway?

  16. This movie was never on the cards. I wrote to Gareth’s agent about it a while back but got no reply.

My view is that Rourke originally contacted Gareth Thomas about the film because some people in the industry were annoyed about Rourke’s homophobic remarks a few months earlier. But Gareth thought Rourke was genuine and took it all seriously. So eventually Rourke had to find a way out.

Moral of the story: Never have anything to do with homophobes.

    1. David Wainwright 27 Mar 2012, 2:31pm

Mickey Rourke is no homophobe , he is in the entertainment industry fro heavens sakes and works and socialises with luvvies every day of his life , do get REAL .

      1. For a start, there is a great deal of homophobia in the entertainment industry. Also I’d say that anyone who threatened to break a ‘faggot’ writer’s legs is a homophobe.

  17. By the way, the Sun on Sunday – mentioned in this PN story – is also responsible for a misleading and distinctly homophobic headline about Emmerdale actor, Danny Miller.

  18. David Wainwright 27 Mar 2012, 2:29pm

We should all be very flattered that Mickey Rourke even considered taking this part , it is a testament to the man that he saw it as a challenging role and his involvement has given the movie and the role great kudos , coverage and publicity .

    1. See my above comment

  19. Thank the Good Lord. I just watched “the flying Scotsman”, filmed before Graeme Obree came out and it was a deeply touching movie. Now, with a more credible actor, GT’s biography can finally be just as good and maybe even better, with that added twist that was missing in Obree’s film.

  20. ITS NOT TRUE! Rourke is still playing GT. GT has said this article is a lie. He even said so on Twitter.

Tom Hardy is a great choice and a damned fine reason to go see any film, especially if we get him in footy shorts!
