  1. The no votes seem only to be motivated by cruelty and homophobia as these children are already being cared for by the people who want to adopt them and denying the children a legal link to their carers, or common law parents (for want of a better term) leaves those children in a more vulnerable position. The best interests of the children have been ignored. This sort of decision should never be taken by referendum. Slovenia has already watered down its promise of same sex marriage in favour of civil unions. It seems that homophobia is gaining ground.

    1. The pernicious tentacles of The Vatican strike again. They would prefer it if the biological children of same-sex couples were taken from them entirely, so of course if something happened to the biological parent they’d happily snatch the grieving child from the only family they’ve ever known. The Church would probably even try and blame the “gay upbringing” if that child subsequently developed psychological trauma due to the abduction.

They are truly vile. There is no other phrase to describe them.

Indeed. It shows up the religions of the world as the real Evil.

  2. “For this reason, we all have an obligation to protect the values of marriage and of family as a community of a husband and a wife, and children.”

But for childrens who need loving, stable homes, they clearly don’t care! Selfish, narrow minded and short sighted!

Exactly. They only care about themselves and their own egos. Nothing more, certainly not the children.

  3. Everyday 23,000 children die of starvation in the world and a gay person could adopt and feed and love one of those children. Who are these people that are so cruel to not help children who are dieing find an adult that will care for and help these children?

Yep and all thank to the Religions of the World.

    2. They are the ones who claim to have the best interests of the child!

I think the firgures you have quoted really do speak for themselves!

It’s their own ignorance that shouldn’t be around children not the knowledge of a loving family regardless of gender.

Yet again the children loose out all because of bigoted adults (well 55% of anyway).

At what point does the welfare of a child come into the equation?

  5. Nominally Slovenia is a catholic country but the catholic cult really is not powerful in Slovenia.

As for the orthodox and muslim cults – well they are tiny in Slovenia.

Generally speaking Slovenia is not stupid/religious, but rather intelligent/atheist.

I wish this story actually had been placed in some/any sort of context.

Is the gay adopton clause the reason the referendum failed or could there be other reasons?

    1. All of them are powerful enough to convince the electorate on a NO vote which is the issue isn’t it, regardless of the context of the article?

Personally I think the context of the artilcle is quite clear

    2. The opponents coudn’t muster enough votes so they started coming up with outrageous claims about the vaccination of children and veganism at the very last minute. That’s what probably tipped the scales and caused people to stay at home. After all, the turnout was only 30%.

We’ll get the rights through the Constitutional court eventually. But in the meantime the current right-wing government will draft a new law, probably attacking unmarried straight couples and abortion – Hungary being the role model.

And yes, the Devil itself (i.e. the Vatican) is solely to blame for this.

  6. The new law would have given gay couples all the rights married couples have, minus the right to adopt children of a third party.

However, a same-sex partner actually can adopt his or her partner’s biological child under the current legislation in Slovenia. The Slovenian Ministry of Welfare and the social services have granted such adoptions in a couple of cases. Also, the courts have recognized some joint adoptions to gay couples who adopted their children in the United States.

    And yes, religion is EVIL!
