The BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is launched
The 26th annual London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is being launched tonight at its traditional home, the British Film Institute (BFI).
The festival opens with ‘Cloudburst,’ a road film about an acerbic lesbian couple in a long-term relationship, starring Olympia Dukakis and Benda Fricker. Julie Bindel, writing in the Guardian, notes that there is only one new British Film, Campbell Ex’s ‘Stud Life,’ which is set in London and explores friendship and sexuality in the urban gay scene.
In addition to repetition of classic films, such as an uncensored version of ‘Spartacus,’ and the Oscar winning ‘Morocco,’ there is also a Scandinavian romance, ‘Jobriath AD,’ and a polemic against so-called ‘pray the gay away’ religious movement, ‘This is What Love in Action Looks Like.’
The festival will close with the Belgian Director Bavo Defurne’s ‘North Sea Texas,’ a story of unrequited love among two teenagers. The season runs until Sunday, 1 April.
