  1. A regrettable result, and one subject to future reversal.

    1. What is it with people like you, Jean? What is it about two people trying to be make a happy, committed life togehter so outrages you that you have to try and squash any attempt by them to have the right to the equal “pursuit of happiness”, as described in the Constitution? Do the world a favor, find a landslide-prone rocky outcrop and fire off a gun until you get buried under the ton of rock you obviously need to hide under. As the song says, “The times, they are a-changing”, and you apparently want no part of what the future will bring. How very sad and pathetic you and your associates are.

    2. Pity we can’t say the same about your birth, Jean.

      1. Jock S. Trap 22 Mar 2012, 10:29am

        Jean? or Keith?

    3. Jean is most likely a Christians anti-gay and anti-social person. The Christians are posting here and some pretend to be gay to make it look like they are saying bad things to people like Jean to make gays look bad. The Christians are using psychological war fare and psychological operations to try and destroy or defeat LGBT people. Most were trained in the US Military or the secret service which they are either working now or retired and help in Christian groups who’s only job is to destroy gays any way they can. They say it is written in the Bible but some of these psychos are just plain crazy.

      1. Paranoid much, secret service christians? Do you have any evidence for this?

    4. Jean, if a Republican, veto-proof, SUPER MAJORITY can’t come up with a simple majority to overturn the marriage equality law, you can rest assured that the law is safe.

    5. Jean is probably a very sad self-loathing homosexual whose only life is to monitor boards like these every second of every hour in an attempt to be the vey first poster to post a negative response to the story covered. A pitiable individual with no life of their own. Probably has no friends and lives alone.

    6. Allow me to sum up what Jean is more simply then anyone above… Jean is a troll and by actively responding to ‘it’ you are only encouraging future trolling. Just thumb down her comment and move on! ‘Its’ just trying to get a rise out of you and your giving ‘it’ that satisfaction. ‘It’ probably doesn’t even believe half the thing ‘its’ saying; probably apathetic to most issues raised. Just thumb down the comments, they get hidden and everyone can move on with their lives!

    7. Speaking as a citizen of New Hampshire and a straight one at that:

FOAD (If you even known what that stands for)

      1. No idea what theat means!

        1. Dr Robin Guthrie 22 Mar 2012, 8:51am

          F off and die.

          1. Oh, I get it now! thanks Doc!

      2. Paddyswurds 22 Mar 2012, 10:32am

        @9865….
…….but hey, in the mean time we won so up your fat xtian ass, bigot.

        1. I think he was saying it to Jean, not us.

    8. Miguel Sanchez 22 Mar 2012, 2:31pm

      John,
It is regretable that God didn’t stop at your place when he was passing out brains.

I for one am glad to see equality rules in New Hampshire.

    9. are you anti gay jean have seen a lot of your comments on here listen lady dont cry over spilt milk now will you but it was defeated get use to it

  2. Well, the fearmongers at the National Organization for Marriage, the Family Research Council and the American Family Association must be freaking out. How will the raise funds to pay themselves huge salaries if people insist on marriage equality?

    1. Maybe they’ll move onto another minority?

      Muslims/Mexicans is my guess

  3. Excellent result. This should discourage further meddling from homophobes.

    1. Would that I had your positive outlook. I just think they’ll up and move to another state to beat their drums for their ultimately futile cause. Just think what could be accomplished if they used these resources to help hungry children or the environment. Okay, taking off my rose-tinted glasses now.

    2. Sorry, I’m confused! The headline says that the attempt to retain equality has been lost by 133 to 202 votes:

An attempt to overturn New Hampshire’s legislation to allow equal marriage has failed by 133 votes to 202 to retain equality for gay and straight couples.

      Should it read:

‘An attempt to overturn New Hampshire’s legislation to allow equal marriage has failed by 133 votes to 202 retaining equality for gay and straight couples.’

  4. Thank God for the good news. Do not let the anti-social and anti-gay Christians get you down, that is what they want to do, make you feel bad. Expose them when you find them, expose them for who and what they are far and wide in your city and on the internet. Most likely they will be Christians who claim that LGBT people force their life style on them. People like Jean. What you do is point out to them how they have forced their failed Christian Religion or their life style on LGBT people for 2,000 years and instead of making the world a better place it is no better today thanks to religious fanatics like the Muslims and Christians who are still locked in a Holy War, only they now call it a war on Terrorism. Christians kill and we have 2,000 years of Holy Wars, Inquisitions and Witch Hunt to name a few not to mention the Pope telling people how condoms are more evil than AIDS.

    1. Rayne Van-Dunem 22 Mar 2012, 12:09am

      Amen, sir. Amen.

    2. Paul O'Neill 27 Mar 2012, 12:04am

Yeah Willian. I’m a Christian and gay. I didn’t realise we were all murderers. Yikes. Silly boy. xx

  5. The vote was actually 211 to 116. America is finally turning a corner to live up to here creed.

    1. I wish I could agree. I’m a resident of New Hampshire. The Republicans voted it down because of the futility of the attemp and the bad press they were getting. Because governor Lynch was going to veto it, and they didn’t have the votes to override that veto, continuing this quixotic quest was making them look stupid. The moron who sponsored the bill vows to bring it back again next year. The guy is such a bigot.

  6. Fantastic news New Hampshire. Soon England will be following your example.

The anti gay vitriol of idiots like Jean belongs in the dark ages and we are going to bury it there

  7. bobbleobble 21 Mar 2012, 10:28pm

My gast has never been so flabbered! I was certain this was going to pass! Hurrah, wtg New Hampshire! Seems there are some good folks in the GOP after all. Shame none of them are running for president.

    1. It wouldn’t have mattered if it passed because Governor Lynch was going to veto it. Also almost 2/3 of the people were against repeal. I can assure you some of these bigots will find themselves out of a job after November’s elections.

      1. bobbleobble 22 Mar 2012, 7:51am

I honestly thought they’d manage to get the supermajority they needed to override, never mind the bill actually fail to pass at all!

      2. Hopefully. Someone should put out a list of the 116 bigots who supported the repeal of same-sex marriage.
That would give people a chance to sack them.

  8. Yeah! I signed the petition a while ago. I’m glad to see that some politicians have brains. I’m happy for gay/bi NH citizens!

  9. Great news.

  10. Great news! Fight, fight, fight against the Christian bigots and haters! When are the Christian oppressors going to mind their own business about how other people live their lives?

    1. Paddyswurds 21 Mar 2012, 11:13pm

To be honest I think our fight is just about over, as the xtian bigots are now clearly in retreat and their increasingly desperate musings are doing all our fighting for us. Ordinary people are now beginning to see the falsehoods and blatant bigotry for what it really is and that is attempting to demonstrate they have still got power. The momentum is now ours and any chance that will reverse is remote to say the least. We even have the Tory party on side ffs.

      1. Dr Robin Guthrie 22 Mar 2012, 8:52am

The NEVER retreat. They just regroup.

      2. Robert in S. Kensington 22 Mar 2012, 11:08am

Do the religious nutters in the UK really believe they can win their argument with those irrational, delusional claims that same-sex marriage will herald polygamy, bestiality, incest? I can’t believe in this day and age people still believe in that nonsense. What they don’t realise is that by doing so, they only help win people over to our side. They’re becoming an embarrassment to themselves and all they’re doing is galvanising anti-religious sentiment and intolerance. If they want a war on religion, they’re going about it the right way. Bring it on.

        1. i second what you said religion is bigoted and outdated the 21st century people are turning away from religion they only have themselves to blame

  11. Paddyswurds 21 Mar 2012, 11:07pm

There never really was any chance that it would be repealed. New Hampshire, like all the other New England States, is progressive and secular and any chance that that will change anytime soon is about as likely as finding life on the Sun.

    1. I wish I could be that optimistic. Governor Lynch is not running for reelection. If a republican gets in office you can be sure the bigots will ressurect this repeal effort once again. We won’t be able to finally rest until more of these bigots die off.

    2. That’s all true in general, but in the last few years New Hampshire has elected many Tea Party Republicans who have embraced pretty far out ideas which you’d never associate with normally open-minded New Hampshirites. It’s good to know the encroaching GOP extremists haven’t got as far as I feared in NH.

  12. New Hamshire is to be commended as honorable lawmakers stood up against bigotry , racism, you must not tolerate the evil, malice , an harrassing assaults by bigots an racists, purtruding in the private lives of gay families and causing atrocities and harrassments, and discriminations , The bigots are hippocrdites like philip hinkle, and senator craig, their abuses, are world wide, and effect the masses around the world and children who they care nothing about, but you as human rights lawmakers , you must care about the worlds families , and right wrongs of bigotry, that is wrong, you must help other human rights orgs and officials overhaul all fifty states to full equality, and fairness, and goodwill measures to all families, you musts reprimand the hate crimes, and protect the children and the families, the bigotry is a testiment of the evil and non caring republicans who also tried to stop diane fienstein form passing a bill adding more legislation against violence against women ,

  13. you must as human rights officials and lawmakers, must show the public , an all women an families the horrors that republican bigotry, go along with, because of bigoty, the Republican party all except the honorable lisa muriska, refused to sign onto a bill adding more legislation against violence an sexual assaults , agianst women and children, immigrants a and minorities and lgbt families, ad their discrmination as well, HOW MUCH MORE DO THE NATION NEED TO NO ABOUT A PARTY THAT CARE NOTHING FOR ALMOST ALL OF THE PEOLE IN AMERICA , THAT ALL WOMEN THEY SAID THEY DIDNNT CARE ABOUT THE VIOLENCE ANS SEX CRIMES AGAINST, THAT ALL IMMIGRANTS OF ANY COLOR AND GENDER THEY SAID THEY DID NOT CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO AND THEIR DISCRIIMNATIONS, THAT ALL SPANISH AND PEOPLE OF COLOR, THATS ALSO ALL LGBT FAMILIES, LIKE THE ONES ALSO IN POLILTICS, THEY STILL SO BIGOTRY AND DISCRININATIONS AGAINST, WHAT MONSTERS OF REPUBLICANS DO YOU AS IGNORANT PEOPLE WANT TO BE A PRESIDENT TO CONTINUE TO ABUSE EVERYONE

  14. HOW MANY MORE CHILDREN HAVE TO COMMIT SUICIDE BEFORE ALL THE NATION WAKES UP AND STOPS BEING BRAINWASHED BY HATE GROUPS THAT ARE NOT EVEN THEIR FRIENDS EITHER, IF YOU DONT HAVE AN OFFICIAL THAT STARTS OUT CARING ABOUT ALL OF YOUR FAMILIES AS ANY GOOD FAMIIY KIND FAMILY PERSON SHOULD, THEN YOU HAVE A MONSTER ON YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU E VEN ELCECT HIM OR HER, IF YOU TRACE THEIR BACKGROUND AND RESUMES, YOU WILL ALL WAYS FIND OUT THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR YOUR URBAN AREAS, YOUR WOMENS RIGHTS, YOUR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN IN MINORITIES AND LGBT COMMUNITIES, BUT INSTEAD YOU WILL FIND THIS CANDIDATES, ON BOARDS OF KLANS, AND HAVE DONE HORRIFIC EVILS AGAINST MANY BEHIND THEIR BACKS AN THRU ORGANIZATIONS, WHO SO MALICE AND INJUSTICE AND UNFAIR TREATMENT IN BUSINESS , AND OTHER AVENUSE, WAKE UP NATION, OFFICIALS MUST HAVE A RESUME SHOWING THEY ARE HUMAN RIGHTS AND EQUALITY FAIR AMBASSADORS, AND CAN SHOW YOU ON PAPER THE THINGS THEY HAVE DONE AND ACCOMPLISHED STANDIING ON THE GROUNDS OF HONOR

    1. carrie, I love it when you get going on that keyboard! lol You have lots of passion for fighting injustices!

    1. Please stop with the caps, the rest of us can make our points without using them and you lose people less than halfway through reading yours!

  18. A fantastic result, and one subject to great joy to all LGBT around the world..

    Another bit of good news

HELSINKI (Reuters) – A group of Finnish lawmakers proposed an amendment on Wednesday that would legalize same-sex marriage, the strongest bid yet by politicians to allow such unions in the country – the most conservative of the Nordic nations.
    ….
    .

    1. It will be great to have Denmark and hopefully Finland both having Marriage Equality soon. But we all must remember to support the decriminalisation of homosexuality in dozens of other countries. we must not forget about our brothers and sisters being persecuted by religion and other homophobes worldwide.

    2. GingerlyColors 22 Mar 2012, 7:07am

Marriage equality will be on my Christmas wish-list which will be on it’s way to Finland’s most famous resident!

    3. Robert in S. Kensington 22 Mar 2012, 12:17pm

So far, only 66 members of the 200 member Finnish Parliament have signed on to the draft for legislation, more are expected to follow. Let’s hope they get enough to pass it, making all of the Nordic countries a marriage equality zone with Denmark legalising it in June. Take note, opponents of marriage equality in the UK, especially C4M. You’re on the losing side of history. It’s coming to the UK whether you like it or not.

  19. GingerlyColors 22 Mar 2012, 7:04am

A clear majority in favour of common sense.

  20. That was a political b!tchslap if ever I saw one. Good for New Hampshire.

  21. Common sense prevails! Good result people!

  22. BRAVO to my neighbors to the north!

    1. I wonder how many decades must pass before those of us in Texas can chear something like this. It will probably be after I am long gone, if ever.

  23. Jock S. Trap 22 Mar 2012, 10:24am

Why does a law such as this now have to be targeted for those bigots who choose to discriminate? No other equality for heterosexuals ever gets questioned so why demand that some in society are treated like second class citizens?

    Absolutely shameful.

I am glad they lost this vote but does this mean they will continue in the hope they will win and over turn such equality? Will they also reduce the tax the LGBT people pay too? I very much doubt it.

Time to put this discrimination to sleep and make all those who support it more irrelevent. A reflection of how they should be treated.

  24. Jock S. Trap 22 Mar 2012, 10:29am

It is quite clear that “Jean” is a character, maybe from Keith? Clearly this character has no real opinion but comments for the delights of the negative and muck racking. It is purely for attention purposes, don’tcha think?

  25. Paddyswurds 22 Mar 2012, 10:52am

New Englanders tend to be Liberal, Progressive and above all fair minded and this bigoted xtian attempt at rolling back time , had, in my opinion as much chance as one of the xtian bigots stepping in some Unicorn poo…… This also bodes well for New Hampshires next door neighbors Maine, where a referendum has been forced on the people by the minority bigots, but should have no problem being passeed,11 and then hopefully wee Rhodie Rhode Island, Americas smallest state, will come on board very soon.

  26. Robert in S. Kensington 22 Mar 2012, 12:21pm

Meanwhile, why didn’t PN publish the ECHR ruling against same-sex marriage as a right yesterday in relation to the French married couple who wanted to adopt?

    1. Mary Marriott 22 Mar 2012, 3:55pm

      They did !

  27. Since the article hasn’t been changed I’ll say it again, the vote was actually 116 for repealing the marriage equality law to 211 for keeping it.

  28. Bill Perdue 22 Mar 2012, 4:17pm

The tide is slowly but surely turning in our favor regarding marriage equality. For once even some Republicans, authors of the anti-GLBT campaign to extend Bill Clintons bigoted DOMA to the states, can see the writing on the wall. Meanwhile, the blinders are still firmly in place in the White House.

Now we need to begin pushing for the far more vital ENDA (the Employment Non-Discrimination Act). We’ll need to push hard with another mass march on Washington to coincide with the next inaugural.

  29. david bates, the sponsor of the repeal bill, “had not expected such a resounding defeat” according to the new york times. “it really became sort of a circus” said bates. to which i emailed
him “and you were the main clown. keep your day job”. if there are others who would like to express their condolences to mr. bates:

    rep.bates@live.com

it is also difficult to unearth anything about this chap and his life except that he’s a christian.

  30. Congratulations to the people of New Hampshire.
