    1. You’ve got to laugh otherwise you would cry. A cess pit of a country corruption and brutality rife and this senator is worried that prisoners might “turn gay”. Does he think his concern might earn him some brownie points with President Mugabe?

….The near total barbarity and ignorance in Africa is to say the least distressing and the fact that it is being fomented by American fundies makes it all the more galling. This ignorant being…I am loath to call it a woman…would rather see the inmates of prison starve to death than contemplate the idea that they might turn to homosexual activity to relieve sexual tension. Never mind the fact that she thinks that one can turn on homosexuality or become homosexual at a whim and that one has the choice. And Still we send these cesspits of ignorance our tax £s.. When is the Governments of the countries propping up these monstrosities going to take notice and say Enough loudly and clearly with “Non” when they come a begging. The despot Mugabe spent almost one million pounds on a lavish b83rd birthday party recently while his country eqats dry grass.

Is there ever going to be a time when you assess what is in front of you without feeling the urge to add in your own existing prejudices just for good measure…?

I’ve already posted saying that this is bloody insane – yet there is a post further down from Simba Lumbe which is saying that Pink News has in fact distorted the original story.

Another very good reason why adding prejudices to the fire is ALWAYS a bad idea…

Fyi, I have been to Africa more times than you have had hot dinners, so I speak with some experience and knowledge of the place which I doubt you have. It IS a Barbaric, Ignorant xtian fundie ridden cesspit of brutality and corruption almost from top to bottom , although there are some tiny islands of hope like Namibia for instance…When you have picked you steps through the unbelievable shanty towns of Lagos for example get back to me. In the meantime I will speak as I see and experience. If your attempting to infer that I am in some way racist for describing what is reality then you could not be further from the truth. Like 20 or 30 Irish men an women building houses for the homeless in Zimbabwe while equal numbers of healthy fit young men lay around in the sun in groups smoking weed and laughing at the whities building houses for them and indeed robbing any tools or equipment we happen to lose sight of for a second

To be still blaming the colonists for the state Africa is in today is, to be honest clamoring and grasping at straws. Almost a hundred year down the road since most of these countries got their freedom it is high bloody time they were getting on with making a liveable and stable state. However corruption is , endemic. . Why should we denigrate fit healthy young men lazing around all day while the filth, excrement and urine runs like a river along their streets and they have to walk around heaps of rubbish outside the hovels where they live. Why are they not spending some of their time cleaning up the environment where they live. The shanty towns of South Africa, Nigeria, Liberia, Congo and countless others are beyond description. Zimbabwe, a country once the bread basket of the continent, is now also beyond description. Once productive farms are now returning to the jungle with farm machinery being cut up to sell for a few cents as scrap. So don’t rant till you know of what you speak.

…That’s as maybe, but discrimination and even murder of GLB people is still rife in S Africa. Lesbians are regularly raped to “cure” them and young gay teenage boys are unmercifully beaten and then taken to prostitutes and forced to perform unmentionable acts with them in order to “cure” them too and if that fails, which of course it will, they are summarily executed on the spot. Barbarity is endemic in Africa and it is being fomented by evil christian evangelists from the USA. They are reputed to actually preach that the “Gays” should be killed and that that is “gods” will. Yet we still send them millions every year, large amounts of which Gay people in the UK paid in taxes…indeed proportionately more than the breeder population, because they can usually claim all sorts of tax breaks not available or allowed to Gay people. Time it stopped and yesterday wouldn’t be too soon.

Seriously though, most rape that occurs in prison is an act of dominance before one of sexual release and is especially not an intimate connection between two people or even a ‘damn he fine’ one night stand. Having sex with another man doesn’t make you gay. Its the attraction romantically as well as physically that does. Not sure how a plastic tube would change that.

      1. No dear it’s called irony! The fact that in Zimbabwe, government that is run by murderers and scum of the first degree could try to mitigate the daily offence they do to the people by this kind of expression of ‘concern’ is worthy of being reviled and mocked. Take a look at the ‘titles’ that Mugabee and others of his ilk like to give himself before you get your knickers in a twist. There was one of his kind who sat on a gold eagle throne with a diamond encrusted crown on his crazed head. That is sadly the level of madness African dictators run to.

Exactly! To quote Lady Gaga she was “Born This Way — as stupid as a rock. If there was a way of turning people gay then one would think that the executives of the Great Gay Conspiracy Oganisation would recommend its implementation forthwith. Senator, read something other than those ancient desert gods’ “holy” books or the Junk Science Digest. Senator, you can no more turn a straight person gay (nor a gay person straight for that matter) than I can turn you white or myself black. All the sex toys in the world do not create one’s sexuality but merely enhance what is already there. So if your husband/boyfriend/brother, etc. came out of prison gay, he went in that way — albeit closeted — and prison was his his way of realising it.

While I am ALL for equal marriage and gay rights, as a movement the LGBTI is misrepresented when papers like PinkNews wantonly select information so as demonize another group.

While the senator DID say that sex toys should be provided to prisoners, it was NOT so that they would be prevented from turning gay as a sexual lifestyle choice. She suggested it as a means of PREVENTING sexual assault prevailant in Zim prisons. Please don’t stoop to the level of peddling lies to make the LGBTI community look like a perpetual victim. You are turning into the very monsters you seek to defeat. Strive to inform, NOT persuade!

    3. This is what the Sen. actually said. Source is the national newspaper, the Herald:

“Considering that some of the same-sex orientation (homosexuality) come from prisons and when those people are out they then spread that orientation, what measures are you putting in place to make sure that vice is stopped?” Sen Mlotshwa asked Acting Secretary for Justice and Legal Affairs Mr Maxwell Ranga.

“In other countries they provide sex gadgets and they have also constructed rooms where people go and service themselves when the desire arises.”

Looks pretty clear cut to me…..
