Another muppet footballer, I know they have a reputation for being a bit ‘fick’ but we are now reading every other day about one of them going on Twitter and saying something bigoted.
Well, at least it’s a good thing they’re now being publicly held to account for their ignorant ramblings.
I absolutely agree. This would have been unheard of a few years ago, and I’m sure as the message that this sort of thing permeates out the fines will get bigger and bigger.
The constant run of homophobic tweets is getting to be an embarrassment for the FA at a time they are pushing the anti-homophobia agenda, so I expect patience will start running very thin with players who don’t get on message quickly
There are quite a lot of pro footballers around. Bearing in mind that they are a bunch of young men and a lot of them have had quite cosseted upbringings thanks to their clubs it’s not really surprising that a few of them aren’t particularly mature. The main story here for me is that the FA is now fining players where in the past they always turned a blind eye. There’s a cultural change finally happening within the game, and that’s a good thing.

Nevertheless many people live according to or beyond their means, and if you had a fine of the equivalent of a week’s net income, I’m sure you’d notice.
These homophobic morons will never get the message from these pathetic slaps on the wrist.
The FA needs to be handing out fines which properly hit these fools in their overstuffed pockets. This problem needs to be put on a level with racism. Until it is seen as such, then nothing much will change.The fines need to be at least a months salary alongside a minimum four match ban. Only then will these overpaid ‘thugs’ (for that is what they’d be if not footballers), get the message.
I think these fines should be more proportionate to their earnings. I am always extra disappointed when homophobic abuse comes from members of the black community, whose own civil rights struggle is still ongoing.

With this sort of thing going on, is it any wonder why football players who are gay feel unable to come out?
this sort of thing needs to be stamped on with not just a few thousand quid fines, but more… half a million perhaps? Ban for 10 matches? That would hit home to some of the homophobic players.
And then again, is there any wonder why gay guys generally don’t like football? The image of the game is too macho, lets tone down this testosterone filled game a wee bit.
