  1. More theocratic drivel. Good grief, do they actually think that we have to hand our reproductive organs in when we step out of the closet? Or that we don’t have families of our own? Or that granting quality to LGBT people will turn everyone LGBT over night? Idiots.

    1. Unfortunately some trans people ARE forced to hand over their reproductive organs to get any form of recognition…

  2. Ryan Thomas 14 Feb 2012, 12:10pm

    Bollocks. Literally.

  3. you would naturally think a people who have experienced so much brutal repression and human rights violations would have more insight.

Libya can only earn respect internationally as a nation when it demonstrate it accords human rights to all its citizens, meaning it does not discriminate based on sexual orientation.

    1. unfortunately history teaches us that quite often when you overthrow a tyrannical government through armed revolution, the 1 that replaces it is equally as bad or worse than the 1 that it replaced

  4. As though the reproduction and continuation of the human race is in any danger.

    1. right… I think they are pandering to the Islamists, what else..

  5. I really don’t worry about these developments as democracy takes a long time to be introduced.

The UK became a democracy in 1928 (when women gained the vote), yet homosexuality remained a crime punishable by prison for another 40 years (and it wass another 30 years before we got an equal age of consent0.

Libya is a hellish, primitive, backward dump which has been subject to a brutal dictatorship for 40 years.

I think they should be given a chance.

In order to protect LGBT rights in Libya we must make sure that women’s rights in Libya are fully protected. LGBT rights are linked with women’s rights.

Ensuring that women in post dictatorship Libya enjoy equal rights is the most efficient way to safeguard LGBT rights

You would probably find that women enjoyed more equality under the Gadaffi regime than they will under an Islamic government. Colonel Gadaffi’s government combined certain Islamic principals with socialism and his style of rule empowered women but still criminalized homosexuality. I cannot see the situation for women and gays improving in the near future not only in Libya but in other Arab countries affected by the so-called Arab Spring. Don’t get me wrong, I never supported the murderous Gadaffi regeime. If that bomb on the Pan-Am flight had gone off ten minutes earlier then it would have come down on my home city.

  6. Dangermouse 14 Feb 2012, 12:38pm

Must say I thought this would happen, after all the new government is muslum, so its not going to welcome gays with open arms. If people thought so, they will have a rude awakening.

    1. jamestoronto 14 Feb 2012, 1:04pm

I am with you on this one. Tunisia, now Libya and I am sure we will be hearing similar utterances from Egypt very soon.

    2. It’s not just that they are muslim governments across the middle east (these are, after all, predominantly muslim countries – converted under the sword). The problem is that they are basing their constitutions on sharia law. This was all totally predictable before the asinine journalists started to go on about “the arab spring” (as if they were liberal democracies throwing off the yoke of communism, like in Czechoslovakia or Hungary) – anyone with any knowledge of islam knew that the “arab spring” would become a sharia winter. But those who predicted this were shouted down as “far right nutjobs”.

Hizb ut Tahrir in the UK seemed rather laughable 25 years ago, with their ambition to restore the Caliphate. It might yet be restored in our lifetime. And our government will have helped bring it about.

  7. The larger consequence of this is that islamic states do not see that gay people have human rights. That is why he is making this statement to the UN Human Rights Council. People really need to get on board and understand that the islamic world has rejected universal human rights. Go and read about The Cairo Declaration of Human Rights under Islam. In their view sharia law trumps “human rights”. They have been telling us their view for 20 years. But in our western arrogance, we ignore what they tell us.

    1. jamestoronto 14 Feb 2012, 1:07pm

In Libya’s not only did the West ignore what was happening, it actually helped install yet another homophobic regime. Good planning and foresight on our governments’ parts.

      1. I agree with you. They are feeding the crocodile, hoping Britain will be eaten last.

But Amnesty International has nothing to say about the Cairo Declaration. There are even attempts within the UN to get it recognised as a modification to the UN Declaration.

Under islamic law, slavery is legal. You can find that in recently published books on sharia law. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliance_of_the_Traveller

And the Cairo Declaration subordinates all human rights to sharia law.

seven billion of us on this planet and the numbers of people are still growing! The planet is already overpopulated, its the reckless religious breeders who are a threat to all of humanity.

    1. You really need to go away and read the Racial and Religious Hatred Act. It’s a tiny piece of legislation. And it has a provision for freedom of speech. Not that Helen Wilson’s remarks could even be remotely considered to be religious hatred or incitement.

    2. Are you aware that you need to increase the dose of your medication to calm you down and stop the voices in your head? You poor sad tormented creature. You are to be pitied.

    3. David Myers 15 Feb 2012, 3:07am

Please people “It gets worse” is quite simply a hateful troll. Do not feed the trolls. Downvote them, report them, don’t give them the recognition of answering them.

  9. The human population of Earth has already topped the 7 billion mark, and this idiot makes this statement?!

It must be their desperation to make it appear they have real, rational grounds for their discrimination, and their not wanting to come out and say it is only religious-based, that leads them to say such nonsense.

  10. I think there’s enough irresponsible drunken straight sex to assure humanities existence…unfortunately..

  11. Oh yes, I didn’t include the religious people who breed like rabbits…

  12. Not surprised at all. Can anyone give an example of regime change which has resulted in a real improvement in LGBT rights? Or for that matter, women’s rights? I don’t mean the signature of this or that treaty, rather an improvement for the ordinary person.

    1. South Africa

      1. David Myers 15 Feb 2012, 3:09am

It did take a while to come about though and it had the support of an inspired leader.

  13. gay issues “affect religion and the continuation and reproduction of the human race.”

The first part is irrelevant, religion is usually a detriment to human rights and human dignity, hence of no consequence when discussing anything of reason that affects civil liberties.

The second part is also nonsense, as gay people do not prevent straight people from increasingly populating an already crowed planet.

Ergo, one concludes the man is a fool..

  14. American Anthropological Association
“The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies … The Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association strongly opposes a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to heterosexual couples.”47

Many religious leaders argue that same-sex marriage would destroy the traditional family and even lead to the downfall of Western civilization. These fears are not substantiated by any contemporary scientific research.”

    1. Because the world’s population is obviously in decline isn’t it! FFS, stupid morons

    2. Robert in S. Kensington 14 Feb 2012, 5:04pm

The traditional family has long been under attack by heterosexuals who breed outside of wedlock, as old as civilisation itself. This is all nonsense and I don’t think any western society is going to take this backward country seriously, although it provides fodder for the right wing religious nutters, especially those in America. Welcome news for the republican party same-sex marriage haters.

  15. Well, despite the disappointment of this outburst, we can at least see that looking forward, we can engage Libya at an international level. With that and with cultural exchange, it is possible that we will see some progress.. Inevitably, this will take time, and we need to be patient.

  16. I hate using a quote from Drawn Together, but “duuuuuuuuuuuh”. Egypt and post-Assad Syria will quickly follow. With 80-90% of the populations in the ME region being deeply religious, this is hardly rocket science.

  17. Staircase2 14 Feb 2012, 8:35pm

    lol the bloody idiot…
what is it with these people?
Do they go to these events after taking a ‘stop thinking’ pill….?

  18. Another Hannah 14 Feb 2012, 10:05pm

Brilliant the “freedom fighters” (right wing fundamentalists?) have actually made rights worse there just as they have in Iraq, Afganistan, Egypt. Do you think out govt. that gave them our money and troops lives are stupid or sectretly want fascist regimes? No more money, no more lives lost for nothing, they should stay out of Syria and stop ecouraging wars that result in huge loss of life and actually make life and rights worse.

  19. brainwashed bible bashers your outdated and out voted in the 21st century
