Former tennis star Margaret Court “does not hate homosexual people”

Marriage rights are not yours to give or to deny. You are not God. You are simply a *former* tennis player.

Actually, rights are not God’s to give or withhold, either. Anyone who says God has rights over us as our creator thereby appeals to some framework of rights over and above God.

  5. Apparently, homosexuality was a “choice” for Margaret Court. Yes, we can all “choose” to live a lie, but that doesn’t make life more noble (or indeed liveable). Opposers of gay rights need to be careful about what constantly fetishising gay sex actually says about THEM. Obsession suggests a vested interest in the subject matter, and nobody has just a “passing interest” in sex.

What is the choice she is referring to? Surely she’s not stupid or ignorant enough to think that people can choose their sexuality and if she really thinks that then her opinion is worthless. But if she thinks the choice is whether gay people should be celibate or allow themselves to be loved and share in fulfilling loving relationships then she is a sick and evil person to expect people to deny themselves love and to live a life of loneliness.

So Margaret lurches from one ignorant soundbite to the next. I bet some of her best friends are gay!
If it’s a choice, why do some gay people spend years in denial rather than simply ‘choosing’ to be straight?
If you glance at a Calvin Kein poster campaign and feel something in your loins that you don’t get from the girl in the wonderbra ad then it’s pretty fair to say that any choice is out of your hands.
You do have the choice whether to just accept it or spend the rest of your years driving yourself neurotic in the closet, but that Calvin Klein model in the poster will still look as attractive as he ever did, whatever George Rekers might have claimed before holidaying with a gigolo he hired to lift his luggage.

Amazing that people like her believe that “God” created us? Really? Last time i checked, my parents were responsible for that. Science has proved we originated long before the Adam & Eve fairy tale. These religious nutters will come up with the most absurd excuses when they are questioned about their own straight sexual orientation. I’m surprised nobody who is on authority on sexual orientation hasn’t challenged these idiots to provide the documentary evidence to support their claims. If what she says is true, why have there been no controlled studies published in the legitimate scientific and medical journals? The day she can prove a heterosexual can be converted to a homosexual, then maybe I’ll believe her.

  10. Another confused bigot taking refuge from their own insecurities by picking on other people. Sad – and also utterly transparent.

How many straight women of her age spend ANY time obsessing over gay sex? Yet it’s apparently on poor Margaret’s mind a lot, with its siren call – a call that she has to choose to ignore, it seems. That’s the implication of what she said.

    Post a reply →
    1. Exactly as you say, it’s so obvious and it’s not only pathetic but she is also attempting to ruin other people’s lives by spreading misinformation which is the unforgivable thing.
Why doesn’t this silly woman read some books based on legitimate, peer reviewed research before mouthing off?

      Post a reply →
    2. It’s kind of sad, don’t you think? OK, so her denial of her true self leads her to project feelings of self-disgust onto others (i.e. us) but I’d rather be hated by some and loved by some for being my true self than to live a lie. I feel lucky by comparison.

I genuinely feel quite sorry for her.

      Post a reply →
      1. What a very generous view, Sarah – I wish she deserved such understanding and kindness.

        Post a reply →
      2. I was torn between feeling sorry for her (largely because I’m assuming things were harder for someone coming to terms with their sexuality whens he was younger) and feeling angry with her for taking out her bitterness on others.

It’d have been better if she’d said nothing, I think, and what did it for me was the specific comment about marriage rights not being ours to take. That was uncalled for, pompous and too much, as far as I’m concerned, so that greatly reduced my sympathy for her.

its interesting how believers become so convicted about their intepretation of biblical legalities, at the expense listening to one’s sincerity of heart, honoring one’s life experiences, acknowledging the fruit of the spirit in another’s life, a fellowship that 1johm1 calls all believers to with those in their lives.

all this when as believers we are no longer under the law.
