George Michael has returned to the UK after being treated in an Austrian hospital for pneumonia.

Outside his London home this afternoon, he told press it had been the “worst month” of his life.

The singer had been due to appear in Vienna in November as part of his Symphonica tour but cancelled a show two hours before it was due to start.

He was then taken to the AKH hospital, the largest in Europe, with 1,600 doctors and says he “woke up” 10 days ago.

Speaking back in the UK, the former Wham! star said he was “incredibly fortunate to be here” adding that he was lucky to have picked up the bug near the Austrian hospital where he was treated.

He announced he did intend to honour tickets for the cancelled shows, saying: “The plan is to play to every single person who had a ticket.

“And I would like to play one show for the doctors in the hospital in Austria who saved my life.”

In a statement, doctors from the hospital said said: “The latest development in Mr Michael’s case, which has evolved from a severe pneumococcal infection, necessitated intensive care due to its severity and extension.

“We are happy to announce that Mr Michael is improving steadily with an impressive regression of pneumonic symptoms, and follows a steady rate of improvement as hoped.

“There are no other health issues with regards to the patient other than the underlying pneumonic disorder, and no further measures had to be taken.”

The singer told press: “I have an amazing, amazing life and if I wasn’t spiritual enough before the last four or five weeks then I certainly am now.”
