Marcus Bachmann, husband of Michele Bachmann, has said if his wife were elected he would use his platform to protect the current federal ban on same-sex marriages.

The Star Observer reports that on his wife’s campaign trail in Iowa, Bachmann told assembled supporters he would use his position as a so-called “First Man” to promote a number of conservative issues.

Bachmann told his audience: “I’ve decided my cause is… pro-marriage, pro-family, and pro-life,”

“We’re going to get this message across that marriage is between one man and one woman.

“We’re not going to minimise what the family is, we’re going to promote families.

“Remember, we are not disrespectful or dishonouring of someone who is choosing and being gay in their lifestyle or wanting to be married. That’s up to the churches. But as the government defines marriage as between one man and one woman, that’s pretty universally understood.”

This summer, Bachmann denied that the counselling clinics he owns have a “special interest” in trying to turn gay people straight.

He said: “Will I address it? Certainly we’ll talk about it. Is it a remedy form that I typically would use? … It is at the client’s discretion. We don’t have an agenda or a philosophy of trying to change someone,”

According to recent polls, both Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry appear unlikely to win their party’s nomination for the presidential race next year, lagging behind Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

Current First Lady Michelle Obama has used her position to promote efforts to tackle obesity in children.
