  1. I’m surprised she didn’t try to change the words to “don we now our straight apparel”

Does anyone else think this is a case of being just a bit too “word sensitive.”

Yes, definitely – on the part of a bigoted teacher. It is pleasing the Head Teacher decided to nip this nonsense in the bud and ensure that pedagogy be carried out properly. Just in case you think the word ‘pedagogy’ is somehow related to ‘paedophilia’, it is not, it basically means ‘teaching’, which as the Head Teacher quickly realised is what schools are in existence to do ;)

Yes, I know what pedagogy means.

    2. No I think it’s a case of someone being incompetent and unable to properly control and educate children, quite similar to when I was at school. At least the headteacher is hands on and involved in the running of the school, well done to them,

Meanwhile there is no mention of the news that Europe has a second out gay prime minister in Belgium. Priorities?

Presumably you forgot to mention the wording “acting”, because Belgium has not in fact had a government for over 18 months, the current outfit being “interim” until a proper coalition is agreed upon, following the [not so recent] elections? ;)

        True but still worth mentioning

  4. So does the carol actually mention what ‘gay apparel’ is?
I tried the boughs of holly but found they’re a bit scratchy for underwear…

Muscle shirts and hotpants, perhaps? It would be a bit cold for those right now, though…

  5. I always thought it was “grey apparel”. I wondered what was supposed to be so christmassy about grey clothes. This makes much more sense!

  6. One of the old senses of ‘gay’ was ‘brightly coloured’, which is what is conveyed by the carol. Up until the early 20th century it commonly meant ‘lecherous, and/or drunken and frivolous’ as when Elizabeth Fry attempted to preach to the ‘gay people’ in a tavern. I applaud the response of the head teacher, and think the children’s teacher would have done a better job just using the carol to show words change their meanings over time – as well as upholding the equal ops policy, of course.

  7. What is wrong with these people in America who want to remove the word gay from the English language? They must be Christian fanatics who are acting in a strange way, going so far as to try and stop children from using words that have been around for hundreds of years. This is like teaching children the fact that dinosaurs roamed the earth millions of years ago only now to be told they had only been around for thousands of years to fit what the bible says, which is false information that will only confuse children more. It is a very cruel thing to do to children, knowingly give them false information and make them stop using words they have been taught. This makes it very clear that adults are dumbing down children to keep them ignorant and unaware of what is really going on.
