Scottish police are appealing for witnesses after a gay man’s jaw was broken in Edinburgh city centre last night.

The attack happened in the early hours of Sunday morning on Waverley Bridge. The 24-year-old victim was walking with friends in the area just after midnight.

They were confronted by three men who began shouting homophobic comments.

One of the men punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, before fleeing in the direction of Princes Street.

The first attacker is described as black, in his early 20s, 5ft 6in, of medium build. He was wearing a black hooded top, a black and yellow scarf and black trousers.

The other two men were white, one of whom was said to be tall, of slim build with dark blond hair, about 21 years old and wearing a red top. The other was aged between 20 and 25, 5ft 7in, of average build and wearing a dark hooded top.

A spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police will not tolerate hate crime in any form and will robustly deal with anyone found to be responsible.”

The attack echoes a similar incident in September, when a 20-year-old man’s jaw was also broken.

Anyone with information should call Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
