  1. Russia is not a democracy.
This proposed law is in perfect harmony with the rest of the Putin dictatorship – no freedom of speech; no freedom of assembly; no democratic elections (well they are democratic except that any viable opposition gets forced out of running).

Russia is lucky to have natural resources, It means that China will take over. And the Chinese are not as incompetent or alcoholic as the Russian leadership.

    1. Lol, true but I still can’t help the feeling that Putin could fight off the entire Chinese military with a butter knife. The dude’s like action man.

If a few more Western got on board and did the same thing, we might see the last of this ridiculous law.

unfortunately i truly doubt that, generally speaking the russians care very little if the international community condemns them for.. well anything if recent history is anything to go by

  3. A reminder of how similar paranoid legislation emerged in the UK during the 1980s concerning Clause 28.

It is a pity that Russia now appears to be 30 years behind the times concerning sexual and gender equality, and especially compared with the advances made in other countries in terms of LGBT emancipation

    Shame on Russia

I was thinking the same thing. I looked it up:a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”.[2]

I tweeted the original story from the Pink News link. Within a day, I received a tweet from a guy in Moscow. It turned out he was FOR the Act. The scaremongering rubbish he came out with, included ”it’s better to have a law against perverts than to offend Islam or Christianity…because they might bomb Russia!”
They guy had a screw loose, but the discussion was similiar to ones had with pro-section 28 goons, in the 80s.
All in all, it’s a worrying law and a worrying time for our Russian friends.

Doesn’t surprise me at all. And they have already bombed Russia. Russian Federation needs to join the majority of the world in 2011.

Isn’t Russia a Council of Europe member? Their positions should get attacked more often by the European Court of Human Rights and the sort.

Haven’t the Russians heard of Western style diversity – where anything is allowed but opInions against deviancy.

  7. If freedom of opinions is declared in the Western democracies, then why there no opinions for any deviant behavior? Hypocricy is the nature of Western world, I think. Gay are part of such public hypocricy.

Good to hear the Foreign Office making this statement though sadly I think it’ll fall on deaf ears and the Russians behind this are intent on doing the harm they want to anyone they disagree with.
