  1. So, like everyone else in the country, LGBT people have less cash in their pocket to spend on nights out. Shame. But not at all surprising. LGBT people – Just as screwed as everyone else.

    1. Kind of blows the myth out of the water of the pink pound, and all our disposable income.

      1. The Nightingale is always packed and having celebrities there like Alexandra Burke and drag queens.
The nightingale own at least 3 bars and the Angel in the village as the rhumor goes so this stinks of poor management since every other bar is doing fine.

It might be good for them to own half the village but when they go under and take that half with them where will their customers go?

  2. It’s a pants club anyway. Abusive staff, expensive drinks and awful entertainment. Let it close.

    1. if you closed all the gay pubs / clubs with abusive staff, expensive drinks and awful entertainment there would be no where left to go !

  3. The Nightingale has long since lost touch with the LGBT community. Most nights it is full of straight kids, especially when there are guest appearances by X-Factor rejects etc. The only decent “gay” night was XXL which has already moved to Core. Had the club tried harder to welcome the LGBT community, and spent money on keeping the venue clean, tidy and well maintained I’m sure it would still be solvent and trading now. They probably wasted too much money on Angel rather than concentrating on their main business.

Judging by the last post it is suffering form the same problem Blackpool has, of Gay businesses who ignore the Gay community and rip them off for their own ends. I was actually talking to someone who runs Blackpool pride last week and they were telling me that there were no LGBT performers in pride because there was no LGBT talent here!!! Instead the entertainment was all straight. This to me who has spent many years money (which could have been spent inthe gay community had the gay community not been so unhelpful) getting my act together. No offer of even seeing me perform. I don’t know if these thick busines people can work this out but if they don’t employ LGBT people, those LGBT people won’t have any money to buy the products those idiot business people are selling!!!!!! The stupidity beggars belief. I could have got the work done elsewhere in the straight community for 25 to 50percent less, and needless to say given the atitude to me in future I will.

    1. Well said!
The greyhound in Wolverhampton is a poor shadow of a gay bar now too.
It’s too dangerous to go there anymore, there’s always fighting and the majority of people there are straight males who turn up in gangs looking for trouble.

  5. I was one of the first members of the Nightingale Club, then a rather small cramped place in Camp Hill; but what a joy it was to meet other gay people and make some life-long friends. Good memories from so many years ago. Sorry to hear that Birmingham may lose this famous name.

  6. The last time i was in the Nightingale it seemed like it had been months since it had been cleaned.

    Sticky carpets are not appealing.

    1. I noticed the rather jaded appearance in the last year or so; a far cry from when Upton Clue was a manager there; the place had a swanky piano bar and had just been freshly done up; large clubs are not cheap places to revamp, and if the money is not there….
BTW, as a highly original drag performer who has been on Britain’s Got talent, I would be really happy to get a booking or two there to help draw the crowds back, and I would be happy to charge just a fraction of what Alexandra Burke and loads of X-Factor dropouts would; and I can actually SING!

  7. Keith...HIV free always! 21 Nov 2011, 4:45pm

“This may surprise you Keith, but not all gay men have anal sex!”
Not all padophiles go on to abuse children either but it is still wrong to foster an attraction toward children rather than fight it!.
“‘Judge others and you will be judged. Judge not and you will not be Judged.’ ”
You should read things in context. The passage is about fault finding in others where your own faults are greater. Judges werte set up in the BOOK OF JUDGES in the bible to PASS JUDGEMENT on wrongdooers. The bible also said not to cover over or conceal gross sin. Jude 7 and many others identify buggery and homosexuality as gross sin. Psalm 97:10 says to hate what is bad.
You however, appear to be identified in the following passage…
    GOD’S WORD® Translation (©1995)
“A time will come when people will not listen to accurate teachings. Instead, they will follow their own desires and surround themselves with teachers who tell them what they want to hear.”
    (2 Timothy 4:3)

  8. So whether it is Birmingham Manchester or Liverpool….

WHY DO WE PUT UP WITH POOR STANDARD OF BARS AND DIRTY ONES AT THAT….let it be a lesson to others…CLEAN UP YOUR PLACES…us gay guys expect better…

A real shame, it was fairly unique in being member owned – run like a gay working men’s club. That aspect of it has now gone, but I’d still be sorry to see it go.
