US professional footballer David Testo comes out
A professional football player based in Montreal, Canada has revealed he is gay.
David Testo, 30, originally from the US, told Radio Canada yesterday that he is gay.
Testo told the station his family, friends, teammates, and team management knew about his sexuality, but he kept it from the public.
He said: “I really do regret not coming out publicly earlier”.
“It’s like carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying around luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself.”
Testo played for Montreal Impact soccer team until October. He received the club’s Most Valuable Player trophy in 2009 and said he regrets not being able to thank his partner.
He said: “The one person I wanted to thank the most, I couldn’t. I just didn’t feel comfortable at the time.”
Having left his team last month, it is unclear whether Testo will continue to play football professionally. If so he will join Anton Hysen to be the world’s second active out gay footballer.
