A man has been arrested after two people were burned at a Leicester city centre gay pub.

The incident happened at the Rainbow and Dove in Charles Street at around 12.40am this morning.

Police said initial reports suggest that a fire was started in the beer garden and two men received burn injuries.

The injured men, aged 22 and 20, were taken to Nottingham City Hospital. Their condition is described as stable although one man received “significant” injuries.

A 24-year-old man was arrested this morning.

Detective Inspector Simon Preston, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “This was a horrific incident which has resulted in one person receiving significant burn injuries and the other with injuries to his hands.

“We are in the very early stages of our investigation, from initial enquiries we are treating the incident as an assault but we are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the events leading up to it.

“Incidents of this nature are extremely rare and we would like to reassure people that we will leave no stone unturned.”

DI Preston added: “If you were in the Charles Street area during the early hours of this morning or you witnessed the incident we would urge you to contact the police, if you haven’t done so already.

“It’s vitally important that we speak to everyone who was in the area as the smallest of detail could help us identify the man responsible. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DS 1152 John Farndon on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, quoting incident number 07:251011 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
