Two of the contenders in San Diego’s mayoral race are openly gay Republicans.

District attorney Bonnie Dumanis, 59, and city councilman Carl DeMaio, 36, are open about their sexual orientation but the fact has barely featured in the race.

Neither has made a name for campaigning on gay rights issues, although Ms Dumanis has spoken out against gay marriage bans.

A recent survey for KGTV/10News showed that Mr DeMaio is one of two frontrunners. He and Representative Bob Filner are both on 25 per cent.

Ms Dumanis is on 16 per cent, while assembymember Nathan Fletcher is on ten per cent.

The Victory Fund says there are around 20 openly gay Republican elected officials nationwide.
