  6. Sean maHer , good for you , other actors will and should all follow, This is no time to stay in the closet, fighting for your rights and others rights is one of he most important things you can do for your families and children, your faces an voices and actions, is needed you are in a position where you can make a major difference like lady gaga, she is a honor icon for human rights, when you are able in the careers you are in you can do much even for the lgbt teen bullying situation, help form groups of actors and go around and set up lgbt centers /shelters where their are none, make your life count because you can , you have the money and the media, use it for good, and be a real hero, not just come out, and do nothing to help others, they dont just need to see a pretty face, also never choose to be with someone you dont love, you sue your agent , if need be for harrassment and get another, but you find your love, and be happy, with someone who equally loves you, heteros, can be evil,

  7. This proves once and for all that Rupert Everett was right about rampant homophobia in Hollywood. It’s been like that for years and it won’t change soon as long as the studios are raking in billions of dollars in revenue even if a gay actor is told keep it under wraps. It shows that America hasn’t progressed that much when a leading straight actor can get away with playing a gay role…Tom Hanks comes to mind in “Philadelphia”, but an openly gay actor is never given a leading straight role.

    1. Yes, it’s so bizarre the way Hanks, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kevin Kline, Tome Selleck etc are showing how well they can act by taking gay roles but it’s generally seen as impossible the other way round.

        2. youre letting the village people tache guide you! THings have changed in tv land- lots of gay actors in straight roles, just needs a major star to come out before hes in his dotage and im sure things will change.

Perhaps it is because heterosexual audiences are happy to see homosexuality ‘acted’ but not heterosexuality which they would prefer to take as a given.

      Post a reply →
      1. I agree. Is Hollywood homophobic or does it simply consider its audience to be homophobic?

        Post a reply →
        1. Probably both to some extent, but I think the concern for its audience’s bucks is the overriding factor.

  8. It’s bad enough being closeted on your own, but hiding a whole family is terrible!! Good on him for coming out at last. The agent sounds like something from another age. But sadly, maybe not.

  9. Given the intrusiveness of PR today it’s pretty amazing that he could keep a partner of 9 years’ standing, not to mention a family, a secret. He must have had to jump through some pretty demanding hoops, poor guy.

    Post a reply →
    1. Not really… In LA actors could be gayly making out right in front of journalists and they’d just turn their cameras the other way. It’s a strange culture.

      Post a reply →
      1. Really? I’d have thought their equivalent of the red-tops would pounce on anything that would be seen to have shock value and sell papers?

It’s called the glass closet – out to your family, friends and co-workers, appear at awards ceremonies with your “friend” (even thank him), support LGBT charities, talk about your children and your “helpmate” on TV talk shows, but never mention your sexuality. It’s similar to Don’t Ask Don’t Tell with lots of open speculation but few facts. Have to protect the career, the show, the bankroll.

  11. I wonder why “Party of Five” was mentioned when he made a bigger splash as Simon Tam on “Firefly”!
    (Yay, Sean! Thank you!)

  15. Rehan, exactly my point and about time that changed. Hollywood should be called out on its blatant homophobia and many straight actors could help make it happen. Many have come out in support of marriage equality and this would be another issue they could support.

  16. The agent suggested ‘Maybe bisexual?’ There are plenty of guys in Hollywood who are blatantly gay but use the ‘bi’ tag in an effort to cushion any negative fallout that comes with being gay and in the public eye. Alan Cumming being the most obvious example.

    Post a reply →
    1. alan cumming dated saffron burroughs for ages..and hes hardly been reticent to involved in gay plotlines/scripts. Probably actually is bi, but i agree quite a lot of the others maybe hiding..

      Post a reply →
      1. Who are all these actors proclaiming themselves to be bi?

        Post a reply →
    2. Alan Cumming describes himself as pansexual. Because, y’know, he is.

      Post a reply →
  17. Dont know really what all the fuss about “coming out” is about…its nothing new and does not really matter to the majority of LGB people.
Some people sould really just get over themselves and get on with their lives without having to shout from rooftops…attention seekers is what i call them.

  18. Oh wow what a shocker, I mean who would have thought it? he just screams straight from every pore!
