Gay news website 365gay.com is to be shut down by Viacom’s MTV Networks division.

The news service began as a Canadian publication in the 1990s and was bought by MTV Networks’ gay media company Logo in 2006.

Editor in chief Jennifer Vanasco said MTV Networks “has shifted its online strategy and so the site is closing”.

The website announced its closure yesterday and Ms Vanasco wrote that September 30th would be its last day.

Thanking staff, contributors and interns, she said: “365gay has covered almost five years of amazing gay and national news.”

She added: “Thanks for your readership, your comments and, in the case of many of you, your friendship. 365gay may be over, but the movement isn’t. DOMA needs to fall. GENDA needs to be passed. Our LGBT children need to be protected and celebrated. Let’s go out there and keep fighting.”

Logo also owns AfterEllen.com and AfterElton.com. In 2009, it closed gay newscast ‘365Gay News Powered by CBS News’.
