A Christian school in the US state of Connecticut allegedly asked a student to leave because she is a lesbian.

Rachel Aviles, who was about to start her senior year at The Master’s School, a K-12 Christian school in West Simsbury, says she was asked to leave to avoid being expelled.

According to the Hartford Courant, she went on a school trip during the spring in which she and some friends joked around by pretending to be married and holding hands.

When they returned to school, administrators questioned them about their sexual orientation.

Ms Aviles says that her friends knew she was a lesbian but school officials reacted badly and asked her to leave.

Headteacher Jon Holley said he could not discuss the incident due to privacy concerns but Ms Aviles’ former coach, Heather Lodovico, said she had asked the school to back down and let the student return.

Ms Lodovico told the newspaper: “She’s a fantastic kid. My reaction was: ‘Wow. Your God’s really small.’ Whether it’s a sin or not, take that out of the picture, and this is still wrong. I think God’s up there shaking His head going, ‘Really? Really?'”

The student has now enrolled in another school.
