Academia ‘has ignored LGBT issues’ 29
6:04 PM — A new National Union of Students report says that LGBT issues have been "actively cut out" of education and academia. The report, Liberation, Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum, says lessons in all subjects should try to be more "inclusive", with focus on LGBT issues, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.

Trial of US gay school shooting expected to end next week
5:23 PM — The trial of a California boy accused of murdering his gay classmate is expected to end this week. Lawyers for Brandon McInerney, now 17, were expected to rest their case today.
Starbucks CEO pulls out of talk at anti-gay mega-church 32
3:19 PM — The chief executive of Starbucks has cancelled a talk at an anti-gay mega-church. Howard Schultz, who is also the coffee chain's president and chairman, was due to speak at the 2011 Leadership Summit at Illinois-based Willow Creek Church, held this week.
Republican gay group appoints ‘homophobe’ Ann Coulter to its board 94
3:17 PM — The US Republican gay group GOProud has appointed Ann Coulter to its advisory board. Ms Coulter, a lawyer and conservative commentator, opposes gay marriage, the end of the military gay ban and teaching children about the "homosexual lifestyle", among other LGBT issues.
Tel Aviv LGBT youth centre faces closure 4
1:26 PM — An LGBT youth centre in Tel Aviv may have to close because of financial problems. The Bar Noar centre was the scene of a fatal shooting two years ago, in which a teenage girl and a counsellor died. The perpetrator has not been caught.
Don’t call me a bigot, says MSP who believes gay relationships aren’t equal 87
10:58 AM — An MSP who believes that gay relationships are not in "any way equal" to straight ones says he has been upset by messages calling him a bigot. Bill Walker, the MSP for Dunfermline said gay rights campaigners had "intimidated" him.
61 per cent of Scots support gay marriage 83
10:34 AM — A large majority of Scottish people now support marriage equality. According to the 2010 Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, published yesterday, 61 per cent of people believe gays and lesbians should have the right to marry.

10:46 PM — The bisexual deputy-leader of the Liberal Democrats, Simon Hughes, is to sue News International over the hacking of his phone by a private investigator working for the now defunct News of the World.
Gay man sexually assaulted and robbed on Hampstead Heath 129
5:26 PM — Police are appealing for information after a gay man was attacked, sexually assaulted and robbed on London's Hampstead Heath. Officers believe the victim may also have been drugged.
San Francisco married gay couple lose immigration case 118
4:41 PM — A married gay couple in San Francisco who have lived together for nearly 20 years have been told that one must leave the US by August 25th. Bradford Wells and Antony John Makk married seven years ago in Massachusetts. For most of the last 19 years, they have shared a home in the Castro district.
Australia’s first gay and lesbian retirement village to be built 18
3:58 PM — Work on Australia's first gay, bisexual and lesbian retirement village is to begin next year. A 120-unit complex is being built in Ballan in Victoria with a croquet lawn, indoor spa and bar.
Judge rules Shrien Dewani can be extradited to South Africa for trial
2:57 PM — A British judge has ruled that millionaire businessman Shrien Dewani can be extradited to South Africa to stand trial over the murder of his wife. Anni Dewani, 29, was shot dead in Cape Town, South Africa, in November during an apparent hijacking. Local police believe her husband arranged for her to be killed by hitmen.
Steven Gerrard voted hottest footballer by gay fans 26
12:42 PM — Gay football fans have voted Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard the hottest premiership player. The Gaydar survey of 4,276 men put Chelsea's Fernando Torres in second place, while teammate Frank Lampard was third.
Trial continues over gay school shooting
12:12 PM — The trial of a boy accused of shooting dead a gay classmate has heard that administrators failed to address problems around the victim's clothes and behaviour. Brandon McInerney, who was 14 at the time, is accused of shooting 15-year-old Larry King in the back of the head during a lesson at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California, in February 2008.
Another gay harassment lawsuit filed in Minnesota 16
10:28 AM — Another lawsuit has been filed against a school district in Minnesota, which has been accused of allowing homophobic bullying. Last month, a suit was filed on behalf of five students in the Anoka-Hennepin school district, where a number of LGBT teen suicides have been reported.

Gay Republican presidential candidate wants to inspire young people 14
4:05 PM — Fred Karger, the gay Republican presidential candidate, says he wants to "send a message" to LGBT young people. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Karger, a former political advisor, described how he felt too ashamed to come out for years.
Riot damage won’t stop Manchester Pride, organisers say 53
3:30 PM — Manchester Pride will go ahead this weekend, organisers have said. The city centre is recovering from yesterday's widespread riots and looting and businesses in the gay village suffered some damage.
