Am I the only one who is entirely confused by this?

    1. Nope. I’m totally lost too. What the hell?!

      1. Jessica Geen 12 Aug 2011, 3:37pm

I did wonder whether it was a hoax. Apparently not!

        1. SteveDenver 14 Aug 2011, 12:02am

I would have wondered, too. Coulter is not “the queen of fabulous,” she’s the wicked witch of the self loathing.

          1. Jock S. Trap 14 Aug 2011, 8:12am

And the biggest problem is by appointing her, she and her other bigots like her, will believe that their hatred and discrimination is acceptable!

    2. Mumbo Jumbo 12 Aug 2011, 7:59pm

It’s bizarre but true and very well explained here:

      1. Thank you for that, Mumbo Jumbo. That explained it very well indeed.

    3. Miguel Sanchez 15 Aug 2011, 3:33pm

You’ve not the only one buddy.

    4. burningworm 19 Aug 2011, 10:21am

Another fine example of shortsighted conservative gay thinking.

      Let the republic start again

      1. Jock S. Trap 19 Aug 2011, 4:42pm

        Not all are the same.

  2. Why is the word homophobe in scare quotes in the title of this piece? There’s nothing uncertain or complicated about the attribution – the vile woman is a blatant and demonstrable homophobe through and through, and should be labelled as such.

    1. SteveDenver 14 Aug 2011, 12:03am

Couldn’t agree more! This is just another in a short and pointed list of misdirected decisions by gay republicans.

      1. David Myers 16 Aug 2011, 11:03am

Actually they almost make the Log Cabin Republicans look good – by contrast. Coulter is homophobic scum so their decision to praise and promote her makes them the same.

    2. Rashid Karapiet 15 Aug 2011, 11:49pm

‘Homophobe’ is a word as loathsome as the thing it purports to describe. It is neither of Greek nor Latin root and has been dredged up by a journalist in need of a harmless alternative to the more truthful and powerful ‘queer-bashing’ or, if ‘queer’ is considered old-fashioned, ‘gay-bashing.’ I’ve been asking the following question for a while now and have yet to get a satisfactory reply: Do arachnophobes murder spiders?

  3. GOProud – I would invite the members to look up the term “Uncle Tom”, it is what they are. Nothing but spineless, craven little self-haters desperate to be “liked” by the right wing christofascist hatemongers and oblivious to the fact that it just isn’t going to happen. They are tolerated so they can be exploited and are too thick to realise it.

    1. Dr Robin Guthrie 12 Aug 2011, 4:21pm

      Well put…

    2. Is it some kind of weird Stockholm syndrome, or are they shallow enough to like her because they imagine her bitchy comments put her in the same gay icon bracket as Joan Collins?
Either they’re being ironic or they’re even dumber than they look.

    3. OMG I completely agree with you

  4. tracy cuthbert 12 Aug 2011, 3:34pm

    im totally confused

  5. Now that is the definition of stupidity.

  6. Paula Thomas 12 Aug 2011, 3:47pm

I thought I’d got the Onion website by mistake. I am not sure what I am more confused by – them asking he or her accepting.

    1. Ditto.

  7. The expression is ‘There are scarier things than a closet and that is a Log Cabin.’

    1. Now that I think of it, wasn’t there a log cabin in the movie “The Ring” in which a demonic lank haired girl crawls through the TV set and puts a curse on anyone dumb enough to pay her attention. Maybe it’s life imitating art.

  8. This reeks of creepy on every level. It is like sleeping or being attracted to the homophobic bully who constantly makes fun of you, puts you down in every respect, spits on and punches you at every opportunity and keep you in fear of his next attack on your person. Just creepy!

    1. You’ve never known a self-loathing closet-case, eh?

  9. concerned resident E3 12 Aug 2011, 4:17pm

reminds me of the odious Nicky Fairbairn who gave several very floridly anti gay speeches as a Conservative MP in the 80s and 90s but had actually been the patron of the Scottish Minorities Campaign (the name of the gay rights group in Scotland when it was illegal to be gay) in his younger days. Nowt so queer as folk.

    1. Robert J Brown 12 Aug 2011, 4:27pm

Nicky Fairbairn or Sir Nicholas Fairbairn the Perth and Kinross Conservative MP?

If the latter then I remember him VERY well. He was odious and very homophobic and spouted family values. When he died he was found to have a mistress.

      1. SteveDenver 14 Aug 2011, 12:07am

Was his mistress’ name “Ian,” and did she have very large hands and an Adam’s apple? (Just a jab at humor from across the pond, where we actually have jokes like Coulter and Log Cabin queers.)

  10. Robert J Brown 12 Aug 2011, 4:26pm

It is a bit like gay catholics picking the Pope as their spokesperson.

    1. Or David Starkey. I see the old tosser is now spouting on the riots too, “whites have become blacks, blah, blah, blah”.

      1. i know its off topic, but ive just seen that david starkey interview. jaw dropping. speechless. embarrassing. he’s obv been an enoch powell supporter all his life and has been waiting for the right moment to go on newsnight and agree with his rivers of blood and justify his racism and bigotry. I thought the poor old sod might have dememtia. whats worse is reading other blogs where some people agree with him! as im sure some people on here will. theres even some pleb who uses enochs name on PN. sad.

        1. and i just found out hes gay. hes probs spanner on PN.

        2. Having listened to that debate I saw an attack by two people because David attempted to discuss issues based on historical evidence. All they saw was the “black culture” comment and assumed racism and refused to allow him to talk about the issue. He was clearly trying to point out that certain cultural traits were being promoted as good, such as gang violence. Those traits have roots in the undesirable elements of both black AND white culture. Of course the rest of the panel, and the BBC presenter heard the words black and Enoch and branded him racist, which shows a complete lack of understanding and total unwillingness to discuss the issues. Owen Jones actually paraphrased him accurately and nothing was said.
I have spent my life fighting against racism, homophobia and persecution in general, and idiots like this don’t help the cause.

  11. Laura Ann Scaife 12 Aug 2011, 5:04pm

A republican by any other name….

  12. There were gay men who adored Thatcher too, even as she was stoking homophobia to get votes, passing lause 28, and saying gay men should never hold high office, they were christening her Tina, acronym for There Is No Alternative an swooning over her hairdo. Gay men love a strong woman that reminds them of a drag queen.

  13. Commander Thor 12 Aug 2011, 5:17pm

Can we elect Richard Dawkins as Catholic Pope next?

    1. As opposed to the pope that isn’t catholic? :)

  14. Paddyswurds 12 Aug 2011, 5:26pm

It isn’t April so what the hell is going on here….. Surely this is a wind up or are these people as stupid as this story makes them look. Totally Confused!!

    1. Paddyswurds 12 Aug 2011, 9:29pm

…now that I know better who GOProud are, thanks to Mumbo Jumbos link above, i am not in the slightest mystified, confused or frankly surprised. GOProud are a tiny breakaway group from Log Cabin Republicans, who, when they found that they couldn’t manipulate Log Cabin to their self loathing ends , broke away and set up GOProud.
What they are is a group of republicans who in an effort to demean the gay agenda, pretended to be for all intents and purposes Gay They are totally against anything any selfrespecting GLB organisation should be supporting. A Republican mouthpiece that are rolled out by the GOP whenever Fox News or CNN wanted a “gay” response, particularly if they wanted a “gay” response to any inititive Obama might propose and are dedicated to Obamas removal at any cost including Gay self respect. So no surprise then that they have appointed this plastic enhanced harridan to their “board” that would have to go out in the street to find a quorum, they are so tiny .

    2. martyn notman 13 Aug 2011, 11:11am

well they do say the safest place to have a rattlesnake is where you can see its fangs…but bizzarre none-the less

  15. Typical of gay republicans having an antigay demagogue on their board. If it’s not about self-loathing, I don’t know what is. This same group votes against its own. Beyond sick.

  16. mmm… I’ll believe this when I see it..

  17. Is this a case of mutual attention seeking by both GOProud and Ann Coulter?

On the one hand the gay political group has lately found it difficult to reconcile the two causes it stands for, its message has therefore been confused and sidelined, and it now thinks it can boost itself by hiring a famous mouthpiece who doesn’t mince words.

On the other hand Ann Coulter might be looking for a new platform on which she can spread her bile. Being called some sort of gay icon might help her back into the limelight if she’s not been getting the attention she thinks she deserves.

  18. Carl Rowlands 12 Aug 2011, 6:36pm

Reminds of the quote by Gerald Kaufman in the 1980’s which went something like … “King Herod joining the Board of Mothercare”………..

  19. Art Pearson 12 Aug 2011, 9:03pm

Well, I’ve always thought ‘Gay Republican’ was an oxymoron.

    1. Possibly without the oxy.

  20. Stage a “pie on her face” event, and broadcast it on national TV. That’s the best way she can help us.

    1. No, better would be for the gay hairstylists to sabotage her hairdo.

  21. Johnny33308 12 Aug 2011, 11:45pm

This is unbelievable! Some sad, demented and self-loathing anti gay RepubliKKKan gay boys appoint a woman who absolutely HATES gays to their advisory board. So, can anyone tell me what is wrong with this picture? Anyone? So much self-loathing is beyond belief. Why live at all?

    1. Obviously she doesn’t hate them, she likes them so long as they know their place and don’t want equality.

  22. Republicans = lgbt rights … Oh He’ll is freezing over … Oh wait false alarm.

  23. JD Painterguy 13 Aug 2011, 3:18am

Ann Coulter is a beautiful woman.

And that is all there is to it. End of story.

I cannot say that I agree with AC all the time, but she does have great big, beautiful baby blue eyes.

    Like wistful seawater.

    1. Are you serious?

  24. Paul in OC 13 Aug 2011, 4:37am

And next up: “Jews for Hitler.”

What a world, what a world.

  25. What the hell is wrong with you log cabin republicans, you cannot be goproud and be assinine too, you are inviting your enemy to be on your board to help give your advice to harm your own gay people and to help bachman run evasive brainwashing on you , are you people that stupid, its like the colored people nominating the kkk to be on the boards, and to be their leader to help them fight against hatred and bigoty, do you seee the assinine behavior, you have just done, you cannot be a positive to others who are victimed by hatred and racism and bigoty by being apart of it your self, the woman tells you in the medial every day that she does not like you people and your families, you stupid people, you cost other people problems and harm by you igonorance, poor choices, you all need to removed who had a part in that decision and re elect better gay official with half a brain

    1. David Myers 16 Aug 2011, 11:10am

Carrie: Didn’t you check out the link that “explains it all”? You really should. It clearly differentiates between Log Cabin Republicans and these GoProud idiots. I think they are anti – Log Cabin disinformation agents in the Republican party and quit possibly not even gay. Their goal is to attack the Log Cabin Republican gays and discredit them within the party.

  26. Jock S. Trap 13 Aug 2011, 8:10am

The mind boggles to how this creep was a) chosen and b) what good she will do if she disagrees with Gay Rights.

Very confusing this is a bit like having Hitler heading a Jewish Rights groups surely?

    1. What do you expect from conservatives Jock? Here are a few more “good” and “shiny” examples coming from the toff troupe, role models for today’s youth:

      1. Jock S. Trap 14 Aug 2011, 8:15am

Yeah there’s a big different between the UK Conservatives and the US Republicans but hey you should how desperate you are to divert from the storyline with your own boring small minded hatred.

        1. Jock S. Trap 14 Aug 2011, 8:15am

          Showed how even…

    2. The rich and feral Bullyingdom kids go trashing around and still keep their comfortable accomodation. Mum and daddy say they’re just kids having fun aren’t they? But in reality this gang of homophobic buffoons are now setting their show on a higher stage. Who would’ve thought…, Gay Tories are geniuses, aren’t they? Duhhhh

      1. And here is a short clip of another buffoon who has been causing tremendous embarassment to his own electorate:

        1. Youtube:

          1. Great video. “Walthamstow is not some Greek city” – Tessa Jowell .

So Cleggy was the only one who got it right…

      2. Jock S. Trap 19 Aug 2011, 4:44pm

People who make excuses are the problem and the reason. None so blind.

  27. Did Maggie Gallagher turn them down?

  28. What is she going to advise them on? How to go back into the closet? How to make homosexuality illegal again and take back the few equal rights won on a federal and state level?

  29. yep youre all, its confusing. but its not that different to a gay guy voting for a political party whose chairman is the homophobic baroness warsi. shes said much worse things than coulter. and theres plenty of gay gays on here who voted for the tories.

    1. de Villiers 13 Aug 2011, 5:11pm

      Don’t be so simplistic.

      1. Paddyswurds 13 Aug 2011, 6:21pm

        @De Villiers…
….”Don’t be so simplistic.” Simplistic. It’s akin to turkeys voting for the Holidays or dare I say the French working for the Naz!s.

        1. de Villiers 14 Aug 2011, 5:51pm

You are a stupid, mindless idiot and a thoughtless thug to compare voting for the Right to collaboration with the Nzais. You have no credibility either in your sloppy thought or your often offensive, purile and childish comments. I suggest you pick yourself up from the gutter of sewage in which you are swimming and carry yourself away to somewhere where we no longer have to hear you.

It’s a shame that someone so disgusting as you happens to be gay. I’d rather vote for the Right fifty times than remain in your sickening presence.

        2. de Villiers 14 Aug 2011, 5:51pm

  30. Given that most definitions of this group appear to suggest that the group may “fight for the gays” by name, it is simply a patsy group set up to look good yet do nothing.
Appointing an openly anti-gay person to the board pretty much confirms that.
It’s also rather shameful that the group has sold out on its values.

    1. Paddyswurds 13 Aug 2011, 9:18pm

They hardly qualify as a group atall. They have only about seven or eight members all of whom are on the “board” They have too go out in the street and pull people in to enable a quorum so they can have a meeting! They broke away from Log Cabin when the found vbthey couldn’t control it.

  31. It’s just the same in the UK where Margaret Thatcher is hailed as a “gay icon” despite passing Section 28 during her reign. I’m sick to death of self-depreciating gay people hell bent on flirting with the ignorant in hope of making friends.

    1. Margaret Thatcher a gay icon?

      On what planet?

      1. She has a handbag and was often portrayed on screen by a man in drag. The similarities more or less end there.

        1. A lot of gay conservatives adored her, no matter how anti-gay she was.

          1. Except ex PM Ted Heath of course, who she deposed as head tory, and who was believed to be the target of her statement that gay men should never hold high office.

  32. GOProud is to gay groups, as the Westboro Baptist Church is to mainstream christianity.

    1. The fact they have proud in their name at all is the epitome of doublespeak.

  33. Gavin Poole is the executive director of the Centre for Social Justice, a right-wing organisation founded by IDS, that is helping CallMeDave push an ideology of a “broken society” that needs to be mended. He appeared on BBC News this morning, criticising the idea that families come in all shapes and sizes. He says we need to reaffirm families headed by one man and one woman. That’s in line with what republicans have been selling on the other side of the pond. Check your connections

  34. theotherone 15 Aug 2011, 12:39pm

are there not persistent rumours about her having been born male?

  35. edwarddwoodjr 15 Aug 2011, 5:08pm

I’ve never seen GOProud do one solitary thing that could benefit the US LGBT population in any way. They normally do just the opposite. So I’m not surprised. They’re backwards scared little people who pretend to have an advocacy group.

  36. ….i am so confused? why would you do that thats like putting Hitler in charge of a Jewish group? why would you do that

    1. If you wanted to be accepted by fascists and seem better than the others.

  37. I just checked the date and it’s not the First of April, so I assume this must be true. Even if it is totally unbelievable.
In what way is a rabid homophobe a gay icon?

  38. I’ve never seen a group of homosexuals so blatantly advertising how self-hating they are. I feel slightly embarrassed for them.

    1. A bit like one sitting next to Thatcher at the Conservative party conference and fawning all over her.

    2. Jock S. Trap 19 Aug 2011, 4:45pm

      It does bring shame.
