I wonder why Pink News persists in doing nothing about the poor state of the posting/comment software. We have been complaining about it for some time now …really since the new format was introduced. The old format worked much much better. Any comment PN?

Are teachers in these schools then required to act ‘neutrally ‘ between bullier and bullied ONLY when sexuality is an issue, or is it prohibited for these teachers to interfere in any case of bullying?

If this latter, then it’s mad, but at least it’s consistent.

  5. Neutrality seems a bizarre excuse. Even if they ‘remained neutral’ about sexuality, that doesn’t mean they should be neutral about bullying. If a child is being bullied, it should be stopped.

I don’t see how any teacher can think it’s OK to not sort out bullying just because of this clause.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about this school district’s policy. I live close and have talked to teachers, so here is how it works-

They have a strict no bullying policy. It includes bullying against sexual orientation, though it is very often completely ignored.

The idiotic “neutrality policy” means the teachers can’t discuss homosexuality in anything but terms christian fundies and LGBT people agree with, which is why most refer to it as a gag policy.
Teachers can’t say it’s okay to be ga,y that it’s natural, it’s not a choice, or they could lose their jobs. It has a lot of equivalents from back in the day- it would be like a teacher unable to say black kids and girls aren’t dumber than white males. They couldn’t tell their students that Jews aren’t money grubbers who want to own all the banks. They can’t dispel stereotypes, they can’t be positive about it in any way.

The policy also means they can’t condemn, that part just tends not to be enforced.

A lot of the schools have officials that interpret the “neutrality” policy in ways that prevent teachers from stepping in when a kid is bullied. The school district vehemently deny this, but they are lying. One of the teachers I spoke to got wrote up for telling a gay kid that it was fine to be gay and okay to be yourself in the hallway after stopping bullies. She won’t come forward because she supports her family and can’t lose her job. The superintendent made it pretty clear to teachers that publicly coming out against the policy would be a very poor career choice. Teachers are afraid to enforce the bullying policy when gay kids are involved because of the gag policy. The anti-gay teachers use it to condemn or ignore the gay kids when they are in trouble, hence a lot of the blaming the kids for the torment others are putting them through.

What you guys have read about in the lawsuits is the tip of the iceberg, and for those 7 suicides there were a lot more suicide attempts.

In Minnesota several years ago Jamie Nabozny won $900,000 in punitive and compensatory damages from his school board for failing to protect him.
Silence/neutrality does nothing to help lgbt students who are being harassed, but a comprehensive school policy that addresses these particular issues might be the thing that saves their bottom (line). This is becoming a major $$ issue for school boards, so time to do more for your lgbt students.

Bigotry on parade, masquerading as ‘religious rights’ , now claimed as ‘neutrality’. AmeriKKKa is no place for gays or anyone who is not entirely bigoted and hate-filled. I am ashamed to be American. It is turning into a taliban-like state, descending into an evil theocracy. I am very ashamed to be American. It is an evil place now.

FYI the half measure was correctly trashed. The fed govt here required them to put in policies to stop the bullying and will monitor them for 5 years.

Christians murder 3000 kids a year in a repeating 9-11

while they talk about protecting life.

We should go to war …….
