Petition wants gay marriage for Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie

  1. Right ….PN decides to give publicity to an online petition for marriage between Bert and Ernie and doesn’t give any publicity to the 24 Epetitions on the government website raised in the last 10 days. some calling for gay marriage and others calling for SS marriage and opposite sex CPs.

In fact no LGBT org wants to coordinate them.

The main gay marriage epetiton which is only 5 days old has 703 signature.

Great, I thought gay marriage was supposed to be a major LGBT issue in the UK and yet PN is prepared to give Bert and Ernie more publicity than a UK petition on gay marriage…Brilliant!!

    “They have no sexual orientation”
Right…does that make them bi or celibate?

      It makes them asexual.

    2. It’s a little strange/worrying that you don’t consider bisexuality to be a sexual orientation.

Especially since an obvious clue is in the name “biSEXUALITY”.

  8. If they have no sexual orientation, then what’s the craic with Miss Piggy and Kermit?

    1. Good point!!! That’s even an inter-SPECIES relationship! LOL!

Sesame Street is aimed at young children and sex shouldn’t come into it – children are entitled to their age of innocence. While most of us don’t want to go back down the road of Section 28 we do not have the right to force our lifestyles on children. We cannot have Gay Rights without Gay Responsibilities. Anyway when are Laurel and Hardy going to get married? After all they do share a bed! And as for Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, what will their offspring look like?

    1. 1) having marriage isn’t about sex it’s about love. That should be encouraged from as young as you can.

      2) laurel and hardy couldn’t of gotten married at the time anyway.

      3) watch muppet Christmas Carol. In that they have children.

    2. “lifestyles”? “force”?
      _____________

You’ve got to stop reading that ‘news’paper. What good does it do to pretend that gay people don’t exist around children? You either have to carry on pretending forever or at some point you have to admit their existence like a shameful secret. Either way you are going to cause confusion and misunderstanding. Some of those kids will be gay eventually, the rest will live in a world where gay people live. You simply can’t shield kids from facts of life because if they grow up with perceptions that don’t match reality, that’s when problems start.

    3. “children are entitled to their age of innocence” – That’s all well and good, but what’s wrong with starting to teach kids that age what the world is really like? I’m sure the hate-mongers have already started their brainwashing tactics way before that age. Wouldn’t it be better to try to counter-balance all that hate-speak with some real truth so the kids can at least know all the facts before deciding what kind of person they want to be when they grow up? Or is it better for us to just remain silent and hope for the best?

Also, just because two people of the same sex might be portrayed as married on a children’s show, that certainly doesn’t mean that they’re going to be shown having sex! It just shows (teaches) that they can have the same kind of loving, committed relationship that other people do. I grew up watching all kinds of heterosexual married couples on TV — I Love Lucy, Bewitched, etc. Ricky and Lucy even slept in separate beds! So where did Little Ricky come from?!

They have always been a happy couple. Living and arguing together.

Make such a lovely pair and should get married. We should have an Ernie and Bert party to celebrate the event

  12. Hmmm not sure that Bert & Ernie should get married. But they’re incorrect about muppets not having a sexual orientation. Kermit & Miss Piggy got married in The Muppets Take Manhattan. Of course there’s also the Muppets Christmas Carol. Gonzo has a girlfriend – Camilla I think. Numerous muppets have relatives Kermit & Robin his nephew. Actually Kermit had thousands of brothers & sisters…This is getting silly. :)

    1. You missed the chance to mention that the Kermit/Miss Piggy and Gonzo/Camilla relationships are both inter-species ones. Compared to those two men getting married seems pretty conservative.

  14. Sorry guys but Sesame Street and the Muppets are two different things. Sesame Street is aimed at preschool children, while the Muppet Show and subsequent movies are aimed an older audience. None of the characters on the Street have relationships.

    1. That seems like splitting hairs to me. So what’s next, the Muppet version of Queer as Folk? Wocka, wocka, wocka! (Hey, Fozzie IS a *bear*, you know!)

Nice idea especially if it helps young LGBT.

  16. Saying a ‘gay marriage’ seems pretty redundant. They’re male characters so I doubt anyone would need it to be spelled out that it’s not a straight one. Also, saying ‘marriage’ instead of ‘gay marriage’ would help promote the fact that marriage for gay people is the same as for straight people but with participants of the same gender rather than some strange, separate thing. I can’t believe the writers here aren’t able to get their head round that.

  19. Let’s not indoctrinate kids shall we. The parents have the responsibility to bring them up as they see best. The schools can teach them to read and write.
If kids must be taught about sex, they should be made aware of the danger of sleeping around and STD’s including Human Papilloma Virus which affects those that practice anal sex, even monogamously. marriage should be recommended with abstinence until marriage.
