An online petition signed by more than 900 people is calling for Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie to have gay wedding.
The petition, at change.com, says: “We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful.
“It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different.”
It adds that the wedding could help children suffering from anti-gay bullying.
The muppet pair have shared a bed for decades, but producers have insisted they are not gay, even after Bert described his haircut as ‘mo’ on Twitter last year.
A Sesame workshop statement said: “Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.
“Even though the Sesame Street Muppets … possess many human traits and characteristics, they have no sexual orientation.”
