It’s a step forward as in celebrating relationship but bit concerned that it “would give gay couples and straight unmarried couples the same inheritance and social welfare rights as married couples.”
    -
It suggests that Gay people can only be treated like any other human being if they become a couple and have a civil union.
    -
Do Gay people not pay taxes in Chile?

A bit of a non sequitur there Jock.

They are talking about the same right to inherit from your partner I expect, though I don’t know what they mean by social welfare rights, but as between couples it’s good that they be the same.

Yes to inherit they have to be Civil Partnered though straight couples don’t even have to be anything just a couple… Something there isn’t right.
      -
Gay couples without Civil Partnerships should be treated exactly the same as unmarried straight couple?
      -
Having a Civil Union doesn’t sudden put people on a par with decency, they should already be that so why be treated differently.
      -
How can it be right to say a Gay couple with a Civil Union is the same as an unmarried Straight couple? It’s insulting.
      -
      Outrageous!

I see what you mean, I think that’s what they tried to do also in Italy, unsuccessfully. It’s as if they have to bundle us with unmarried straight people to stand more chance of success.

Indeed. The concept of Civil Unions in Chile sounds like progress but for all the wrong reasons.

Chile, like Argentina is a country that has rehabilitated itself in the years since brutal dictatorship. Last year the eyes of the world were on Chile as they pulled off that amazing mine rescue. By extending rights for gays Chile is showing that it is determined to put the days of Pinochet behind it and join the family of modern nations.

“all couples deserve respect, dignity and support of the state” my ass…than apply it to marriage.

How can he say something like that when he opposes marriage? Duh…
