  1. I bet the BBC didn’t like the fact that he also presents a Saturday night show and a CBBC children’s programme about animals.

    1. This is why I am watching the US version…

  2. Sex scenes are always gratuitous – regardless of gender – what happens in a sex scene is, sex – if dialogue or action during sex drives the story on then it is driven forward by those actions and words not by the sex itself – Besides Barrowman is the worst kind of self absorbed ‘showman’ – so keep ya dick in ya pant John and just work on your ‘gratuitous’ acting.

    1. That’s a ridiculously shallow and ignorant comment

      1. clearly a Barrowman fan – lol -

        1. No, just someone with an education that you clearly lack.

    2. darkmoonman 21 Jul 2011, 7:35pm

How about you, Dave, just not watch the show? Keep your nose outta Barrowman’s pants. I don’t need a constipated nanny telling me what I can watch, rating the quality of what I watch, or judging my intelligence or education when he’s not qualified. I broke with the Abrahamist sex=bad long ago and replaced it with sex=normal.

      1. Couldn’t agree more!!!! I get fed up with people going on about how much they dislike JB…Get a grip and just don’t watch and don’t keep going on at those who DO like him…we aint listening mate!

  3. The Neo Puritan BBC headed by devout boss and chairman should not censor what cannot be all that explicit, it should just schedule such episodes later than usual.

    1. I emailed the BBC and got a crap email back about how the US & UK shows are expected to be different etc! The usual blah! Going by what I have read they’ve cut out an arse shot which is frankly stupid given they had a butt shot in Children of Earth!

      1. On the whole the US are, but if you have ever seen Starz series Sparticus you will have seen how graphic this network channel can be. They don’t have the same restrictions as say Fox! Saying that I REALLY don’t thinkthe sex scenes in Torchwood will be as explicit as it is Torchwood, which is still part of the BC franchise of Doctor Who and no matter how much it changes it always will be a part of Doctor Who.

  4. And here was me thinking the US was more puritan about sex than us. Clearly not. Question is – will the uncut version *ever* be shown here?

    1. They are, which makes this decision all the more bizarre, possibly explicable by the changes at the top?

    2. Sandiwich11 21 Jul 2011, 2:54pm

USA Networks are. Starz however is a cable company so therefore has no advertising guidelines to adhere to

    3. It’s on a US pay-channel where I guess they can go as far as they want, just as explicitely porn channels can..

  5. I am shocked that the BBC have stopped this! Torchwood is an adult show, it is on at 9pm I don’t understand why they have any reason to cut it. What if it was a heterosexual sex scene… I don’t think the beeb would have cut it.

    1. Can it be any more outrageous than Strictly Come Dancing?

    2. Jock S. Trap 21 Jul 2011, 1:04pm

I agree but then thats the BBC for you.

    3. Sandiwich11 21 Jul 2011, 2:51pm

They haven’t cut the scene, they have edited it slightly differently due to it’s gratuitous nature. They have also done the same with a later hetty scene and a violent one, so please don’t play the homophobia card.

      1. Sam Maloney 22 Jul 2011, 10:41pm

We could only know for certain that it’s NOT homophobic if we could compare the material removed from each scene.

We can’t simply rule it out because other scenes were trimmed too– homophobia has been the default for so long that it’s not an unreasonable first assumption.

      2. Well by 10pm Saturday night I’ll know how gratuitous it is as I not only record and watch the BBC version but I also DL the Starz version!

  6. Jock S. Trap 21 Jul 2011, 1:03pm

Guess people better wait for the DVD then.

    1. Black Hawk Down 21 Jul 2011, 1:07pm

      Thank goodness for bit torrent

      1. Keith Bradley-Wilson 21 Jul 2011, 2:25pm

When you find the torrent link for the uncut version, can you post it here for us all, Black Hawk Down? ;o)

        1. Sandiwich11 21 Jul 2011, 2:48pm

The ‘uncut’ version hasn’t been aired yet, it is on Starz this Friday and the BBC next Thursday.

The BBC have only edited the scene slightly thou, it has not been cut at all.

          1. Are you a BBC representative?

You certainly seem to be going to bat for them as if you know more about this than the rest of us do.

          2. Galadriel1010 21 Jul 2011, 5:52pm

Hayden, one of the writers has said that it’s a 10 second difference between the US and UK versions.

          3. Sandiwich11 21 Jul 2011, 9:21pm

Nope, I’m a fan of the show who actually does some research before spouting off after reading one incredibly misleading article, lol

          4. @Galadriel1010 There shouldn’t be ANY difference! We has BBC licence payers have paid for this. Unlike those in the US who chooose to prescibe to Starz we HAVE to buy the licence if we wish to watch TV! So no, it shouldn’t be edited! We’re adults not children and frankly I am fed up being treated like a child by people who don’t know me!

  7. It’s nothing they grab just to put on the camera and sensationalise it. Funny that cause for the last month Barrowman has been telling all and sundry there will be male nudity and ‘man sex’. If anyone is guilty of sensationalism its him. As for Torchwood as entertainment? Its a pile of old sh1te but each to their own. I’d just prefer not watch John ‘Jazz Hands’ Barrowman battling aliens made from eggboxes and pipe cleaners.

    1. by all means, do not watch it then.

    2. Why are you here? You don’t like the series or Barrowman so why comment? Just don’t watch the series and don’t watch John, I am sure he want me you!

  8. Sandiwich11 21 Jul 2011, 2:43pm

I really wish people would stop reporting that the scene has been cut, it hasn’t, it’s just edited differently to make it less gratuitous!

The BBC episode 4 looks to have 2-3 minutes of material added that the USA one won’t get, yet I haven’t seen one person claim that this is unfair as yet 9_9.

    1. Galadriel1010 21 Jul 2011, 5:53pm

I agree. Jane Esperson has said that the difference is about 10 seconds. I’m sure they’ll leave the scene in there, but maybe not as graphically.

  9. Sandiwich11 21 Jul 2011, 2:45pm

The ‘uncut’ version hasn’t been aired yet, it is on Starz this Friday and the BBC next Thursday.

The BBC have only edited the scene thou, it has not been cut at all.

  10. I don’t see why they can’t have it both ways. Stick the cosy version on BBC1 and a less sensitive version on at a later time on BBC3. It would help define both channels and help BBC3′s ratings as well.

    1. When I emailed the BBC about this I suggested they showed the FULL version on it’s repeat which is on the following Monday on BBC2 at 11.20! And given they’re replay, wich was exactly the same as a friends, I think they barely even read my email and so not have taken a blind bit of notce of my valid suggestion!

  11. I for one will not be tuning into any more of the episodes shown on the BBC I will find a copy on the internet to watch and that possibly goes for any other of those rare gems that are made by the BBC.

BBC watch your ratings fall. I do not need some middle aged prude telling me what is or is not suitable for me to watch.

    1. If you want a series 5 I suggest you tune in to the BBC version! As we are now digital every person watching in the country digitally registers! SO you don’t watch and you are one less viewer! DLing the series registers as nothing! I do both. I record & watch BBC One and DL the Starz version!

  12. Shame. Gratuitous gay sex is in short supply.

    1. Hello…Triga films. And the acting is a billion times better than anything John jazz hands Barrowman tries.

    2. Spanner1960 25 Jul 2011, 4:37pm

If you want gratuitous sex of any kind, go watch a porno.
The scene(s) were unnecessary and superfluous, and most certainly not viral to an already lacklustre and shallow story that is deteriorating on a week-by-week basis. It’s turning into CSI meets the X-Files.

  13. martyn notman 21 Jul 2011, 6:26pm

have received the least helpful and informative reply to my complaint ever! basically fobbed off…

    1. Ditto!! The BBC gave me the crapest of replies that was EXACTLY the same as my friend Tims!

  14. Love John <3

Fantastic actor and singer and very good presenter and host.

I believe him when he says this will be a massive mistake story wise. 10 seconds is huge. Think of all the best moments in film history where 10 second make the difference.

BBC really shot themselves with this one.

    1. LMAO, yes all the best moments in film history vs a moment on bloody Torchwood. Citizen Kane it ain’t.

      1. WHY are you even commenting on this page if you OBVIOUSLY don’t ike the series. All you are doing is disrespecting those who do. Frankly your opinion counts as nothing to those who actually care about the series!

    2. I’m also a huge fan! John is my one and only ‘Man Crush’ as I’m a gay girlie! lol

I know people who either know him or who have met him and he’s a genuine YES genuine kind and funny man who thinks of his fans always. John is one of the few celebs on twitter who will, at 3am, chat with his friends and tell you things that you want read in the tabloids! His time spent with his fans on twitter of frankly priceless! He has a great respect for his fans as do they of him!

      1. John ‘jazz hands’ was excellent in Doctor Who, and earned the spinoff Torchwood, just as Liz Sladen (RIP) earned her own spinoff DW series. I made a point to iPlayer JBs childrens show to see if he could do it. Good ‘serious’ presenter and a good openly gay ambassador to the next generation (I don’t think there has been an openly gay Blue Peter presenter – the nearest they got to scandal was Janet Ellis getting pregnant out of wedlock).

Unfortunately, JB lost all credibility with Tonights the Night. Want to talk about gratuitous sex? What about JB pretty much masturbating on Saturday Night Primetime?!

And his comments about the sex scene in Torchwood are valid. The director included that sequence, it is not the place of a penpushing exec to tamper editorially with the show.

  15. Another Hannah 22 Jul 2011, 3:07pm

My straight mum watches Torchwood. I find it too uncomfortable to watch. I tried to watch, but stopped watching when they showed a charred wrecked body, horrendously injured, but still alive and evidently in a lot of pain. Too much for me. I don’t suppose there’s a chance of my sensibilites being considered? Only those of homophobes……

    1. Who said it was in pain? The only thing that was comsious about it was his open eyes! And didn’t you watch Children of Earth? I thought that was far more disturbing than this!

  16. sick scene < leave the gay stuff in the bedroom and stop trying to push the issue that its normal .. because its not . it gays are trying to mainstream there crap . next thing they will want the Bible rewrote leaving the parts out were God condems Gays …. Come on everyone Go back to the closets . we like it better that way

    1. Ben Foster 25 Jul 2011, 6:47am

what the hell are YOU on about?

personally I thoughtt the scene was as boring as the rest of the episode. Bin it all. but the principle needs fighting for – against this sort of loony.

    2. Are you gay? Sounds like your not..so go away and keep out of something that has NOTHING to do with you!!

  17. The scene was a flash back and forth between a same sex couple having sex and a str8 couple having sex. Neither was more/less explicit than the other. I guess the question is, if it was only the str8 scene would it have been cut? I think we all know the answer.

    1. Well given that we didn’t actually see Rex and Vera HAVING sex I bet not! We all know how happy the BBC are to show lesbian sex, and this is coming from a lesbian, before the watershed. This says to me it is hetro males who have their fingers on the editing button!

  18. Simply disgusting!

I will not watch Torchwood anymore.

    1. Why? Because there some sex in it? Didn’t you watch the scene ins eries one between Owen and Diane? Or the scene between Tosh and the alien Mary? Were you alseep?

  19. SPOILER ALERT!!!

Well I said I’d get back to here after seeing it! And frankly I cannot SEE why the BBC feel the need to edit the scene. You don’t see any bodyparts except the barmans bum (side view)! It it is intercut with the sex scene between Rex and Vera (all they did was roll around) and one with Oswald Danes. Jacks actual sex scene is only short. The only part that could be deemed as being gratuitous would be the barman showing Jack a Very good time! lol It is nothing!! More happened between Owne and Diane in ‘Out od Time’ series 1 of Torchwood! That was just them and they were obviously having sex!

Very sad on the part of the BBC!

  20. That was something i never needed to see!!!!I’m scared for life and if they need to do that for people to watch i’m done watching!!!It wasnt vital!!!It was distasteful!!!If i wanted to watch Gay porn id order it!No longer fan of this show!!

    1. Eddie the Editor 29 Jul 2011, 1:32pm

Torchwood has always had gay writers and since the beginning has featured an obsession with crow-barring gay ‘life-style choices’ into just about every storyline for no apparent reason. What I find more annoying is the incredible lack of character consistency, and the appallingly unrealaistic dialogue. One minute it’s “Oh my God – it’s the end of the world!” – the next minute, Jack’s heading off into a gay bar. Throughout the program there is absolutely no continuity of the thought processes of the characters. Eve Myles has IMHO always been grossly miscast as an action hero – you look at her and just know you could knock her out with a kitten. The dialogue she is asked to deliver beggars belief and offers her no continuity of character. As for the contrived camera angles – the car pulls up at the warehouse – one girl in the front seat – one in the rear… they’re ‘lost’. Obviously it would have meant too much effort to shoot that scene with both girls in the front seat!

  21. I don’t want to see two men having, I don’t want to see a man and a woman having sex, I’m a lesbian, but neither sex scene was any more gratuitious or over the top than any other sex scene that has previously shown on the Beeb.

  22. I saw the Starz version of that episode and thought the sex scene was unneeded – Not just the bumming scene but also the straight stuff with Rex and Vera. I’m a male gender change lesbian by the way

  23. I have a hard time believing that a gay sex scene is vital of a science-fiction story.

  24. I am still waiting for “full on” nudity. I want to see what John Barrowman has got down there. :) ANd if you know the plot of the rest of this seasons shows you know that the sex scenes are critical to the internal logic of the plot.

  25. And what about “SHameless” Lots of kool bum f-ing there. Love it.
