John Barrowman says Torchwood gay sex scene ‘vital to story’

  1. I bet the BBC didn’t like the fact that he also presents a Saturday night show and a CBBC children’s programme about animals.

  2. Sex scenes are always gratuitous – regardless of gender – what happens in a sex scene is, sex – if dialogue or action during sex drives the story on then it is driven forward by those actions and words not by the sex itself – Besides Barrowman is the worst kind of self absorbed ‘showman’ – so keep ya dick in ya pant John and just work on your ‘gratuitous’ acting.

How about you, Dave, just not watch the show? Keep your nose outta Barrowman’s pants. I don’t need a constipated nanny telling me what I can watch, rating the quality of what I watch, or judging my intelligence or education when he’s not qualified. I broke with the Abrahamist sex=bad long ago and replaced it with sex=normal.

The Neo Puritan BBC headed by devout boss and chairman should not censor what cannot be all that explicit, it should just schedule such episodes later than usual.

    1. I emailed the BBC and got a crap email back about how the US & UK shows are expected to be different etc! The usual blah! Going by what I have read they’ve cut out an arse shot which is frankly stupid given they had a butt shot in Children of Earth!

      1. On the whole the US are, but if you have ever seen Starz series Sparticus you will have seen how graphic this network channel can be. They don’t have the same restrictions as say Fox! Saying that I REALLY don’t thinkthe sex scenes in Torchwood will be as explicit as it is Torchwood, which is still part of the BC franchise of Doctor Who and no matter how much it changes it always will be a part of Doctor Who.

They haven’t cut the scene, they have edited it slightly differently due to it’s gratuitous nature. They have also done the same with a later hetty scene and a violent one, so please don’t play the homophobia card.

We could only know for certain that it’s NOT homophobic if we could compare the material removed from each scene.

We can’t simply rule it out because other scenes were trimmed too– homophobia has been the default for so long that it’s not an unreasonable first assumption.

          4. @Galadriel1010 There shouldn’t be ANY difference! We has BBC licence payers have paid for this. Unlike those in the US who chooose to prescibe to Starz we HAVE to buy the licence if we wish to watch TV! So no, it shouldn’t be edited! We’re adults not children and frankly I am fed up being treated like a child by people who don’t know me!

  7. It’s nothing they grab just to put on the camera and sensationalise it. Funny that cause for the last month Barrowman has been telling all and sundry there will be male nudity and ‘man sex’. If anyone is guilty of sensationalism its him. As for Torchwood as entertainment? Its a pile of old sh1te but each to their own. I’d just prefer not watch John ‘Jazz Hands’ Barrowman battling aliens made from eggboxes and pipe cleaners.

I really wish people would stop reporting that the scene has been cut, it hasn’t, it’s just edited differently to make it less gratuitous!

The BBC episode 4 looks to have 2-3 minutes of material added that the USA one won’t get, yet I haven’t seen one person claim that this is unfair as yet 9_9.

  10. I don’t see why they can’t have it both ways. Stick the cosy version on BBC1 and a less sensitive version on at a later time on BBC3. It would help define both channels and help BBC3′s ratings as well.

If you want gratuitous sex of any kind, go watch a porno.
The scene(s) were unnecessary and superfluous, and most certainly not viral to an already lacklustre and shallow story that is deteriorating on a week-by-week basis. It’s turning into CSI meets the X-Files.

John ‘jazz hands’ was excellent in Doctor Who, and earned the spinoff Torchwood, just as Liz Sladen (RIP) earned her own spinoff DW series. I made a point to iPlayer JBs childrens show to see if he could do it. Good ‘serious’ presenter and a good openly gay ambassador to the next generation (I don’t think there has been an openly gay Blue Peter presenter – the nearest they got to scandal was Janet Ellis getting pregnant out of wedlock).

Unfortunately, JB lost all credibility with Tonights the Night. Want to talk about gratuitous sex? What about JB pretty much masturbating on Saturday Night Primetime?!

And his comments about the sex scene in Torchwood are valid. The director included that sequence, it is not the place of a penpushing exec to tamper editorially with the show.

  19. SPOILER ALERT!!!

Well I said I’d get back to here after seeing it! And frankly I cannot SEE why the BBC feel the need to edit the scene. You don’t see any bodyparts except the barmans bum (side view)! It it is intercut with the sex scene between Rex and Vera (all they did was roll around) and one with Oswald Danes. Jacks actual sex scene is only short. The only part that could be deemed as being gratuitous would be the barman showing Jack a Very good time! lol It is nothing!! More happened between Owne and Diane in ‘Out od Time’ series 1 of Torchwood! That was just them and they were obviously having sex!

Very sad on the part of the BBC!

Torchwood has always had gay writers and since the beginning has featured an obsession with crow-barring gay ‘life-style choices’ into just about every storyline for no apparent reason. What I find more annoying is the incredible lack of character consistency, and the appallingly unrealaistic dialogue. One minute it’s “Oh my God – it’s the end of the world!” – the next minute, Jack’s heading off into a gay bar. Throughout the program there is absolutely no continuity of the thought processes of the characters. Eve Myles has IMHO always been grossly miscast as an action hero – you look at her and just know you could knock her out with a kitten. The dialogue she is asked to deliver beggars belief and offers her no continuity of character. As for the contrived camera angles – the car pulls up at the warehouse – one girl in the front seat – one in the rear… they’re ‘lost’. Obviously it would have meant too much effort to shoot that scene with both girls in the front seat!
