Three of Glee’s main characters are to leave the show after the third series.

Rachel, played by Lea Michele, Finn, played by Cory Monteith and gay character Kurt, played by Chris Colfer, will graduate from the school.

Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy said he thought the change would be more realistic.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, he said: “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticise you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

Murphy added that Colfer and Michele thought the plan was a “good idea”.

“They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top,” he said.

The third season of Glee is due to premiere in the US on September 20th and Murphy said more characters are set to leave at the end of the series.

Glee has won GLAAD awards for its depiction of LGBT characters.
