New York register offices to open on a Sunday for gay weddings
Some register officers in New York are to open on a Sunday to give gay couples a chance to marry as soon as they can.
The legislation does not come into law until July 24th, which is a Sunday. Although register offices are usually not open on this day, some are doing so to allow gay couples to get their wedding licences as soon as possible.
Couples who wish to marry have to obtain a wedding licence first and wait 24 hours before they can tie the knot.
Yesterday, officials in New York City announced that clerks’ offices in all five boroughs will be open all day on July 24th.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: “This is a historic moment for New York, a moment many couples have waited years and even decades to see and we are not going to make them wait one day longer than they have to.”
In Syracuse City, officials said register officers would be open between 10pm and 2pm.
In other cities and areas, clerks said they would look to New York City for guidance.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law on June 24th, making New York the sixth state to allow gay marriage. A 30-day waiting period must pass before gay couples can wed.
