We expect professionalism in pilots. People responsible for landing hundred thousand pound planes at eg 170MPH when the visibility may be a quarter mile or less and the autopilot is out of service.

The guy may be a jerk, but he has a right to a private conversation. If it was offensive to the person he was talking to, then that person should pursue that. The fact that others heard it was an accident. We don’t need “thought police” every where we go. This should never have been a big media thing.
Clearly Frank, you are unaware of how most company’s anti-harassment policy would disagree with you on that point. In a place of employment, this wasn’t an appropriate conversation to have with another member of staff. The reason for such policies in companies it to foster an environment conjunctive for the well-being of all its staff and hence the company itself, and to prevent a situation where courts are involved in a harassment charge. This is not “thought police” nonsense, this is professionalism. I suggest you get more familiar with how companies work before making uninformed remarks about fictitious “thought police”.

What if the traffic controllers were gay. How would they feel. IMHO they have a tougher job. Listening to ATC is like a continuous stream of chatter about where to go, what to do, why and confirmations and reconfirmations and yes changes. One mistake can be a tragedy. I;m told one or at most 2 violations of separation standards re planes and you lose your certification and your job with it.
while enroute, most pilots have little to do, the autopilot flys the plane ( Often company rules), they simply watch over everything, keep updated on weather, fuel etc, and need to “stay ahead” of a plane doing 500 mph.

A radio transmission from an aircraft is only private in two countries: UK and Canada. Anywhere else it’s in the public domain. Though in Canada, some ATC tapes are being made public (i.e. Swissair 111) so it’s a grey area with Canada. In the UK it’s private as far as OFCOM and the CAA have mentioned.
People just shouldn’t fly with South West – just as they shouldn’t shop with Sainsburys if it can’t bring itself to express any regret about its ads appearing alongside vile homophobia in this week’s the Scottish Daily Express

Interesting that his rant against gays was about the Chicago based crew, and the “grannies” comment was about Houston. So I have yet to see an apology addressed to the gays. Some other sites in the US have picked up on this.
